But the concept of those condemned to hell being "without any hope" is a long-standing meme in Christian religions, especially among Bible-thumpers.

I was brought up strict Catholic, and the warning that there was "no hope" for those consigned to eternal damnation was driven home at every opportunity. The quote is not Biblical, but the concept of the damned having to "abandon all hope" is a tenet of most Christian religions.
