(CNN)Sen. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, said Friday he will not join the Trump administration at a town hall in Lewisburg, West Virginia.

According to a spokesperson from his office, Manchin told the crowd that would not be taking a Cabinet position, but instead will continue to work with the Trump White House in his capacity as a senator.

Manchin, a moderate Democrat, representing a state that overwhelmingly voted for President Donald Trump in 2016, is up for re-election in 2018. Speculation about Manchin making a move to the Trump administration ramped up when the President visited West Virginia at the beginning of August and announced that the state's Democratic governor Jim Justice was switching parties to become a Republican.
............................................

If Manchin left the Senate, Justice would be able to appoint a Republican replacement, giving Trump and the GOP one more vote for big issues like health care and tax reform.

1. Yet the far-left want him gone... even if it means giving the seat to the GOP...

... to "send a message" and to "make a point" and to "stand their ground". It's very Sarandonesque of them. The "burn it down" or "let it burn" or "destroy-to-rebuild" strategy is a very foolish and short-sighted one. (I'm guessing those far-left "activists" are under some sort of belief that a New England style liberal could actually be elected in West Virginia.)

11. They're also fooled by comparisons to the GOP - Dems can't act like the GOP

The GOP today is acting like a 19th century European autocratic party -- they're fully purchased by billionaire donors and all moderates have been purged by gerrymandering and dark money.

So the GOP can be ideologically pure.

The Dems are a more traditional party of coalitions. We must compromise to win.

This was never going to happen IMO but it's nice to see Sen. Manchin completely rule it out.
