General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs there a Republican mutiny in the works against Mitt Romney?
A few of Romney's vanquished foes have probably been dreaming about a brokered convention for the last week? They never really cared for Mitt. They gave their tepid support simply as a Party tradition. Their heart was never in it.
Now that the owner of a far-right website and popular conservative discussion board for Freepers has declared his opposition to Mitt, we can guess that he is not the only one. They have little incentive to save Mitt from the disasters of his own making, ie, lying about his years at Bain and refusing to offer any transparency on his tax returns. Many of them dislike it as much as the Democratic left dislikes it.
It appears there may be trouble brewing? There is a lot of nervousness in the flock. Romney's supporters are talking desertion. Barack Obama appears to be the least of his troubles at the moment.

(23,977 posts)They'll moan and groan about him, sure. He's not the strongest candidate they could have run. But he's incredibly very much rich and the establishment backs him now, so the disgruntled wingnuts will fall in line after the convention and pull the lever for him when the election rolls around.

(12,272 posts)And that Obama is using Bain as a shiny thing to distract from something negative about Obama. Some Republicans do seem to be distancing themselves from Romney though.
Maybe there is more talk about strategy, with some reserve because it looks like rough sailing, but this Bain thing, as much fun as it is for us, it really isn't getting out there.
That might change, but after the convention, Romney and company will have $$$$$$$$$$ to make Mitt look better than Obama and Rove probably thinks he can still do it.

(390 posts)I think the American's people'e tolerance of fucking Bush and the
antics and corruption of various repukes made them think they
really could run and win with a walking stereotype of a clueless,
crooked CEO right out of Office Space. And, let's face it,
they might be right. Three and a half months to go and the American
people's memory is short, plus a little Diebold action and ya just
might still have a win for Rmoney.

(602 posts)In my opinion, there is just too much dirt being dug up on Romney. What has been revealed and proven true so far is bad enough, but what must be terrifying to the Republicans standing on the sidelines worrying about this -- the "bedwetters" as Romney's campaign called them -- is what they don't know about yet, but fear is coming. I can't imagine any but the true hardcore Romney supporters are determined to ride this crazy train all the way off the cliff with him, and that's exactly where it looks like it is going, to me, anyway.

(7,404 posts)According to ThinkProgress and I asked whether some in the GOP might be shopping around for another candidate at the GOP convention. Hard to see how that can happen but who knows when it comes to Republicans because they could wrestle the Etch-A-Sketch away from Romney and take him right out to the picture.

I still can't believe they're allowing guns outside of the convention.

(6,440 posts)Mind you, they also insisted that Paul could win the nomination despite running more or less the same campaign as in 2008, when he, erm, didn't win the nomination. So I wouldn't use them as a reliable source.

Ron Paul supporters really believe it's either him or America is destroyed.
I wonder what will happen to them when the old man dies. Will they become a cult?

(16,862 posts)they have never liked Romney. They are also the people who hate Obama the most and if they think Romney won't be able to beat him, they are going to push hard for another nominee. However, a lot of wealthy and powerful people have already given millions to Romney's campaign and they aren't going to like seeing all that money go down the drain. This situation has all the makings of a big rift in the Republican Party and they're going to cut their own throats if they can't hold it together.

(11,175 posts)It's probable that, if all the primaries and caucuses were to be re-run now, Romney would do worse than he actually did.
It's certain, however, that none of the primaries and caucuses are going to be re-run. Romney has the delegates. They'll vote for him on the first ballot, and he'll win on the first ballot.
Are there any convention delegates who are "talking desertion"? Many delegates are legally bound to vote for Romney on the first ballot. Most of the rest will vote for him because they genuinely support him, or because there's no viable alternative, or because they don't want to be seen as retreating under fire from Democrats.
B Calm
(28,762 posts)Huh. .
I look for many of those delegates to vote for Ron Paul at the convention.

votes at any time?
I've seen counts of the total number of Republican superdelegates as high as 168 and as low as 120. How many delegates does Romney have in total? He needs 1144 to win on the first ballot. In addition to superdelegates, could Romney delegates "poached" by Ron Paul put him short of 1144 on the first ballot? If so, the second ballot would be completely up for grabs.
If someone other than Romney steals the nomination, self-entitled Romney supporters will not be happy and will spoil party unity. Maybe they'd go as far as Ted Kennedy supporters went in 1980, keeping their campaign offices open AFTER the convention and helping to allow the other party to win the Presidency.

(14,040 posts)I know, some of you are probably thinking all repubs are crazy but, alas, I think there are a handful of sane one's around. I mean the crazy faction that has taken over the repub party, mainly the tea baggers and christian-jihadists. So, it's not surprising that when he looks to be floundering, the "anyone but Obama" meme seems to lose steam. They've felt all along that with his record in Massachusetts makes him no different than Obama. Let's not forget the issue of his mormonism--that's never set right with them either. There are lots of reasons for the crazy right not to like Rmoney.

(843 posts)President Obama is fully immersed in a campaign against Willard. A huge monetary investment has already been made in advertisements and research against Romney and his previous life. The Republicans could drive all that into waste if they nominate someone else to stand in Mitt's place.
DCBob
(24,689 posts)you could also say there is an even larger monetary investment in Romney on the right that would be wasted. The Koch boys might be very upset. They will need to pony up to buy another candidate.

(67,190 posts)You can tell by some of the nonsensical threads a few posters have been promoting here to try to change the subject and give Romney a little breathing room to try and get past this near first round knockout.
That is what is happening.

(2,850 posts)Personally I'm hoping they try to disrupt the convention, and just generally make a mess of it. I think shittens will still end up with the nomination, but so much the better for us. Paul frightens me because a large number of people seem to have no idea how crazy he is.
