Also, the general topography of the region is such that stuff drains from the northwest to the southeast. So all the rain that has fallen northwest of the Houston area is coming our way..............most (if not all) the major waterways here are out of their banks now, but will not crest until sometime Tuesday.

We have two major reservoirs on the west side of the region. They're both filling too fast, so the flood control district, along with the Army Corps Engineers, are starting to release water from one of them in three hours, the other is planned to start in 24 hours. This will flood many homes downstream, and still flood many homes upstream, too. They can't stop the level rising in the reservoirs, they can only slow it.

As the flood control district spokesman put it "we're doing this because a controlled release is better than an uncontrolled one". In other words, they're trying to prevent failure of the dams.

as I type. The sound of water hitting water is deafening like being behind a waterfall. It hasn't stopped in hours. It can get worse, believe it will be!

Doing better today, been between the bands most of the day. Came close early morning to getting flooded with the ditch overflowing. It was about a foot away in a ditch that is 35-40 feet deep.

The next couple of days will be close. The storm surge is going to back up the drainage that has been able to keep the water moving. If we get rain like last night it will be bad. The track has Harvey going right through town Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Besides all the devastation, one touching thing that stands out to me is that many people are taking/carrying their dogs (and hopefully their kitties) with them.

the authorities finally got wise and realized many people, if not most, consider their pets to be family members, not possessions

in any direction without the street blocked by water. rushing water. People are trying to get out of flooded homes, neighborhoods and areas that will flood tonight when they release the dam and levies.

This is the worse floods Houston area has ever had.

once storm drains stop draining because major bayous are full-water quickly backs up towards homes and gets in homes.

50 inches of rain over a couple of days- it is amazing thousands didn't die.
