It's hard to believe that over a thousand human beings lost their lives to Katrina, but they did.

And having a big river and a big lake a few hundred feet above city level with outdated levees for protection.

The damage to Houston will be as bad as Katrina, but I think people were able to evacuate earlier than Katrina. There are more interstate highways in Houston compared to NOLA and Mississippi. I think the damage amount will be early equal to Katrina, some of these people are former Katrina evacuees....they left NOLA and moved to Houston to start over. That is gut wrenching.

If I hear another "official" say 'this is a 500 year event'. This is happening every damn year.

was the government fuckup afterward that treated the city like a contagion zone and wouldn't allow people out or rescuers and supplies in for nearly five days.

This one is affecting more people over a much larger area but so far, it's 100% due to the storm and massive amounts of rain and not to HeckuvaJob Brownie and his nitwit boss Chertoff or any dimwitted successors. Once the clouds clear by the end of the week, things should start to recover.

From wiki:

Katrina displaced over one million people from the central Gulf coast to elsewhere across the United States, becoming the largest diaspora in the history of the United States. Houston, Texas, had an increase of 35,000 people; Mobile, Alabama, gained over 24,000; Baton Rouge, Louisiana, over 15,000; and Hammond, Louisiana, received over 10,000, nearly doubling its size. Chicago, Illinois received over 6,000 people, the most of any non-southern city. By late January 2006, about 200,000 people were once again living in New Orleans, less than half of the pre-storm population. By July 1, 2006, when new population estimates were calculated by the U.S. Census Bureau, the state of Louisiana showed a population decline of 219,563, or 4.87%.

35,000. That's the number of Katrina refugees who relocated to Houston - and the number in Houston shelters right now.

This story is just starting.

Keep in mind that Houston is a much larger city in terms of square miles than New Orleans.
