A view from the other side

Frequently, I'll read conservative viewpoints for contrasting ideas and understanding of the opposition. I try to limit these sources to "mainstream" writings such as The National Review, The Economist and even the NY Post which has a fairly varied OpEd page. Mostly, the opinions are just what you'd expect but every now and then something pops out.

Here's a column for TNR that takes Trump to task for his appalling relationship with Congressional leaders, particularly Mitch McConnell:

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/450788/donald-trump-mitch-mcconnell-republican-congress-arizona-jeff-flake-kelli-ward-legislative-agenda-stalled

The essence of the article is that if Trump hopes to accomplish anything in office, he'll need to work with McConnell. The closing sentence is powerful:

But if Trump still has hopes of governing rather than merely using the White House as a platform for his public vendettas against the media and recalcitrant Republicans, he’s going to need to cope with his rage and make peace with the majority leader.

Two thoughts that come to mind are that Trump doesn't understand "governing" and it is impossible for him to "cope with his rage." Anger and self-pity are all that he has to stroke his own ego. The Trump presidency is doomed to fail since he has no idea what he's doing but I'm fearful that the damage he does will be immeasurable.

That Andy Borowitz is one funny guy.

Neither one of these things is going to happen.

Where is the precedent?

EVERY time he's done a "teleprompter speech," you can see and feel the loathing and rage and resentment and his immediate need to hold a "rally" or do a speech like the one he did at Trump Tower, to nullify the things he didn't mean and was forced to say.

And "making peace" with McConnell? This is the guy who has said, over and over, that you have to hit back at your enemies 10 times harder. He sees McConnell as an enemy. Who the hell thinks he's gonna get on his knees with an olive branch?

While I appreciate your joke, this advice to Trump is coming from his side. But I agree with you that Trump cannot change and he sees everyone as his enemy.

This presidency has failed and it will get worse.

by without much comment by the media because of the hurricane coverage in Houston is how trump seems to have shot his wad with the NK situation, thankfully easing, unintentionally of course, the nuke anxiety quotient.

He claimed before that if NK launched anymore missiles he would respond. Well NK just launched a missile over Japanese territory, blatantly calling his bluff, and trump has done nothing.

He's shown that he's just all words and the North Koreans have undoubtedly noted that. Look for further provocation from them because of trump's non-action.

But like all cowards, he backs down or walks away when he's challenged.

I believe you're correct, brush, that North Korea has seen through the empty words of the Trump White House. Further, with Bannon, Gorka and crew gone, the likelihood that Trump will use nukes is reduced somewhat. However, the DPRK will continue to advance their nuclear program.

don't have to "work together".
Our only hope for a split might be Trump's fucking wall.

"if Trump still has hopes of governing rather than merely using the White House as a platform for his public vendettas"

Trump doesn't care about governing. That just leaves using his office for vendettas, which is all he knows.

But Mr. Tobin did begin the statement with the word "if."

We know Trump is in this for his personal and financial gains only. He doesn't even know what "governing" entails.
