"Identity politics" has for decades referred to GOP strategy of appealing to poor and middle class people on social issues. Ever since Nixon launching the GOP Southern Strategy, the GOP has been appealing to racists and homophobes, and chasing votes by amplifying abortion division.
Now, the Republican talking point is that DEMOCRATS are the ones using identity politics. Their argument doesn't make much sense to me, but it appears to be that Democrats embrace tolerance so Dems are focused on identity.
Here's an example of that GOP deflection.

The GOP are afraid - they are afraid of Dems tethering the chicken of racism and hatemongering to them in 2018. So they are engaged in projection.
We must tether that chicken to them. It's been 40 years that the GOP is using identity politics to win elections. Reagan would not have been president without identity politics and racism. The GOP is actively trying to blame liberals for the divisiveness the GOP caused.
Don't let them. The GOP is the party of divisiveness and identity politics.

(16,104 posts)Trump just "won" based on the two things they keep saying Democrats shouldn't do.
Identity politics. White victimization in response to "that Muslim from Kenya."
Attack politics. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Many, many voters turned out for Trump based just on his relentless attacks against these two people.
What do the pundits tell us?
We need detailed leftist economic policies ( not unlike "NAFTA sucks"? ) and we need to stay away from social issues like White Supremacy, Institutional Racism, reinvigorated homophobia, and elitist corporate greed.
We should be laughing at these fools telling us not to be who we are - and sometimes "Not the Other Guys" works just fine.
