Avoiding taxes, off-shore accounts and shippng US jobs overseas are all things that would make Mitt a right-wing hero. They wouldn't turn that sick base against him. But what might?
Mitt's not just an everyday Mormon. He's a bishop and gives a great deal of money to the church. Could his financial business involve hiding church money and building a structure for a Mormon hope of controlling this country, it's businesses, it's money, etc.? Any such thing would send the Christian right into a pitch-fork mob. There are corporations in the US that are already very Mormon controlled (like Alcoa). I think the depth of his involvement fiscally in that church should be looked into.....and the makeup of his off shore investments should be looked into for such a link.

(58,737 posts)He at least has deductions for that, I'm sure.
I wonder if he receives compensation for his bishopric?
In some respects, I've heard that the Mormon church is a bit of a ponzi scheme, where rising in the church leads to wealth. Of course, most churches kind of work that way anyway.

(34 posts)Romney served as an unpaid bishop and in other higher church leadership positions. All local church leadership is unpaid, Romney never received any compensation for his church duties. Romney is no longer a bishop and is just "Brother Romney" to the rest of us Mormons. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) is hardly a ponzi scheme, and to assert such is just childish.
He gave 10% tithe and I'm sure extra to other church funds. Just like I do, my parents and Grandparents. There are thousands of Obama supporting mormon democrats, please stop treating us like the Bogey man.

(27,787 posts)Citzen's United allows them to do so, right ... through the churches business holdings, which as I understand are substantial.
Sounds like you have some insight here, and this has been a question I have wondered about.

(34 posts)While any business that is owned by the LDS Church will not donate to political PACs or Super PACs for fear of bad press, you had better believe that the Marriott Board members and other Member owned business will surely kick in a fair share. When I lived in Nevada I worked for a large mormon owned accounting firm, and we all donated to Harry Reid's campaign although the rules were much different then.

(7,162 posts)The LDS church is NOTHING BUT a Ponzi scheme.
And your clergy is NOT unpaid. Above the level of Stake President, ALL serving officials are paid, quite handsomely, in fact.
Of course, we could verify this with numbers, except... oh, that's right, the LDS church doesn't release its financial records.... just like Mitt.

(34 posts)We both know that Romney never was paid clergy.
If the LDS Church is a ponzi scheme I surely think it is a well managed one. Like my mama say's go big or go home.

And keep your meaningless blessings to yourself. Your "priesthood power" is nothing.

(10,164 posts)Over 10% directly, IIRC, and a large chunk via his own charitable foundation, so I doubt that's what he's hiding.
I'm thinking it's something illegal: failure to report income, claiming residencies in states other than Massachusetts to avoid paying taxes, claiming one state as his residence for voting purposes and another for tax purposes.
