The Hill Editors: Player of the Week: Mitt Romney (Player?)

Player of the Week: Mitt Romney

By The Hill Editors

This could be a crucial week for Mitt Romney’s bid to capture the White House.

He has been put on the defensive by President Obama’s attacks on his record at Bain Capital, as well as for his unwillingness to release more tax returns.

<...>

The key for Romney is to repeatedly highlight the ailing economy. But the story recently has been about other issues, including immigration, healthcare reform and Bain.

There is speculation that Romney will soon announce his running mate — a move that would surely change the subject away from his business record and his tax returns.

2. i'll be saying this many times: the veep pick is nothing but an opportunity to make a big mistake.

the best a presidential candidate can hope for is to not screw up.

other than the occasionally screw up, the veep selection simply doesn't factor into anything.

arguably, they can sometimes make a difference in their home state -- but the other side reacts to this and simply shifts resources elsewhere, making some other state(s) closer than they otherwise would be.

i'm at a loss for any election where the veep choice was viewed as a deciding factor.

How about 1944? FDR drops oddball Henry Wallace and selects Harry S. Truman as his running mate. FDR/Truman won a close election with Truman bringing in the farm vote.

besides, fdr was never going to lose after d-day and the liberation of paris.

the only reason the veep choice in that election was interesting was because fdr was practically lock on winning.
