Good question... if Mitt is still the nominee.

Here's the thing. If Romney is low in the polls, he will have to debate.
If he's ahead, then it's likely he would either not debate or else set
the terms to his liking.

shown on a level playing field with the incumbent President. I would concede that this is of more importance to the Democrats as the Republicans have an excellent echo chamber and Fox News as their house "news" organization. Still the debates are important to some extent.

Sure, he will more than likely get his ass handed to him three times by President Obama, but not going to a debate would be so stupid on his part it's unfathomable. He would get hammered in the media for not going on because they are counting on these debates for ratings. Plus, those debate times might turn into what would essentially be a free hour-long ad spot for Obama.

Romney will debate, don't worry. Get your popcorn ready, though.

The TV media has already spot advertising times for immediately before and immediately after the debates. TV media is counting on 1,000,000s of eyes.

If romney doesn't show, they will absolutely lose their nut.

Rmoney will be the nominee. Even Ron Paul can't challenge him now. The convention will be a coronation.

and remember that despite everything that has been thrown at him Romney is only down 2-3 points in most polls. If he's doing that well after all of this then they will certainly not change candidates. Ford was down 30 points in 1976 and he was nominated. Carter was down 25 points in 1980 and he was nominated. Mondale was down 20 points in 1984 and he was nominated, etc.

Now wouldn't that make a great campaign ad to be broadcast either before or after the convention?

There's no getting around it. Believe me, if it were possible to be on the ticket and get out of doing at least one debate, they woulda made that happen for Palin. She was scared witless, imagine how Team McCain felt during that event!

There will be debates. Team Mitt will push to make it all as scripted as possible. I am sure of another thing, the President will be able to make his points and nail Mitt where needed no matter what sort of rules are in place.

I for one am greatly looking forward to it!
