(5,790 posts)I don't think he meant harm to his teammates, and I don't think he was staging a counter protest.
A flag flies in front of my home, 24/7 and I do stand for the national anthem. I stand because the flag stands for the Constitution, which is what our troops actually swear to defend.
The Constitution gives football players the right to kneel, just like it gives white supremacists the right to march around holding tiki torches. As long as you are peaceful and not advocating violent overthrow, you enjoy that right.

(65,168 posts)I can't see how he did. He had to know it would make his teammates look bad while given the meatballs the chance to see him as a hero.
I find it impossible that a 4 year college grad with a hitch in the Army as an officer would not have deduced that outcome.

For example, misuse of the word "given" rather than "giving", while inconsequential and benign-- a mere oversight one might say, illustrates that while we're focused on A, B often takes the lion's share of our mistakes.
