http://www.politicususa.com/2017/09/27/michelle-obama-drops-blunt-truth-women-voted-hillary-clinton.htmlFormer First Lady Michelle Obama told the audience at the INBOUND conference that any woman who voted against Hillary Clinton voted against their own voice....
Looking at how this administration played out, the former first ladys message could be expanded beyond women to include immigrants, persons with disabilities, Hispanics, or anyone who is not a conservative white male. Too many voters were suckered into the media narrative that Trump and Clinton were equally bad when even the most casual common sense examination of the two candidates revealed this not to be true.
Hillary Clinton using a private email server was never equal to Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women. Trumps refusal to release his medical records and tax returns were not the same as the Benghazi conspiracy theory. The media falsely equated them and in the process depressed voter turnout and caused people to tune out on the election.
Michelle Obama was correct. Women and all others who bought the lies that Trump and the Republicans were selling did vote against their own voices. The sense that everything will be fine no matter what that voters felt during the Obama years has been shattered. Donald Trump is the consequence for voting against your own self-interest, or not getting involved.
Something tells me that millions of Americans wont make the same mistake again in 2018 and 2020.

the recent study/report about how the voter ID law in WI depressed turnout and kept people from voting is another straw on the camel's back.

(4,612 posts)And Ill bet 2018 and 2020 are already targeted and vulnerable to repeat performances. Between gerrymandering, homegrown election rigging/manipulation and "Russification" I am very doubtful about "throwing the bums out" in the upcoming elections. Election integrity is crucial and we can no longer rely on what we once accepted as a "normal" process. The Russians know it. The Republicans know it. The drastic dimensions of what happened in 2016 are still not fully appreciated or understood by many in the USA.

(23,271 posts)I have zero doubt that Repugs are working on dirty stunts to tilt elections in their favor, and I am quite sure Dems are NOT doing enough to prevent it! We Dems have got to come out in force to protect election integrity in the coming cycle--it needs to be an all-hands, full-court press on the powers that be to shut down the GOPee theft machine.
And although Putin probably achieved his main objective in defeating Hillary Clinton and installing their mole tRump in the WH, I have no doubt they still have an interest in "keeping the pot stirred" and undermining our election process still further in the future. Repugs likely have little interest in stopping them, even an incentive to encourage it, if not to outright actively encourage it. It's scary.

(412 posts)We can't even get a bipartisan commission together to look at Russian interference because repugs won't admit there is a problem. Sadly, I think 2018 is going to be a bust for us.

(53,056 posts)She talks about how since the election, young women have come up to her to apologize for not voting for her or not voting at all. In some cases, they've been dragged by their mothers to apologize. Clinton says they seem to looking for absolution, but that she can't give it.

(12,448 posts)I remember being appalled when I read, shortly after the election, that 52% of white women voted for Trump (my own demographic!) I know a lot of those were Republicans, but still...they voted for a man who bragged about sexual assault, who stated that "you have to treat women like shit," who consistently rates women based on appearance. I could go on; there are too many instances of his misogyny to quote here.
As for that 52%; did they hate Hillary Clinton so much that they voted for THAT?

i think i could thank them for apologizing without giving them the peace of mind they seek. that will take action to make it right going forward.

(53,056 posts)While some love having a narcissist and white supremacist in the White House, people with a conscience do not. Anyone who didn't vote for Clinton and isn't a bigot or sociopath is naturally going to have regrets. Of course, those who enjoy seeing the poor and marginalized suffer will not. They voted, either directly or indirectly, for a man who reflects their values. That some of them are sanctimonious about what they unleashed only provides further evidence of their sociopathy.

(10,611 posts)The same way that those who sought to "punish" President Obama by saddling him with a GOP Congress.
It's not about Hillary.
It wasn't about President Obama.
Time and time again, he tried to explain to people that THEY had the power to change.
He tried repeatedly to warn people not to "give the keys back" to the GOP to drive the country into a ditch.
And for both of them, it wasn't about voting to help them personally.
They will both be fine no matter what socioeconomic horrors the GOP manages to inflict, as will many other people with means.
But they tried to get voters to vote for their own good. And too many voters were too ignorant, ill-informed or apathetic to heed the warnings.

(45,514 posts)it must be exasperating.
For some people, the election must have felt like this was once in a lifetime, and a very obvious choice. Others seem to think "maybe next time" or wait for someone better to come along who may not even exist and is wishful thinking.

(28,810 posts)about WHY?
i know at least 30% of the population is authoritarian, whether dominant or passive, but that does not explain that many women willing to concede life choices to someone else. let alone vote for a known sexual predator/pervert who hates their guts.

(28,211 posts)Just look at the machinations that many of the Evangelicals perform to justify their faith and control others. There is no real way to overcome this influence. Regardless of the cases and proof shown, they are not interested in listening. Many Conservatives, and this includes orthodox faiths, are content with paternalism.
You can present Trump, completely unvarnished, and they find ways to accept him. Not because they generally agree, but because he represents anti-abortionists and the old school mentality, they are accustomed to. Trump is the devil that will deliver the church directives. That is why so many clergy are in his court, not because they agree with him, but because Trump is maleable and will deliver on objectives that would not be seen in a Democrat presidency. Just look at how the GOP congresswomen mainly vote paternalism.
I know it's a tough concept to grasp, as it flies in the face of reality. But, they are not going to change anytime soon.

(14,586 posts)Because we're this close to Charlie Koch taking over and the billionaire freaks installing Trump as DICK-tator. We might end up with another Holocaust. I've been warning people since Trump slithered into the White House -
About the private for-profit prisons springing up to house the 11 million people the Trump 'administration' wants to round up.
About the white nationalists, klan and nazis who have gotten a pass from Trump to ooze out from under their rocks with their brown shirts and automatic weapons.
About the resurgence of overt racism.
About the constant efforts of the right wing (Koch and his ALEC-guided radical libertarian stealth party) to chain the American people to unrestrained capitalism.
So, I'll tell you all that I totally, so totally hope I'm wrong. Because, if there are more elections and we put sane people into office and get this nation back on track, I will cheerfully and publicly eat a big plate of crow. God, I hope I'm wrong.

(4,973 posts)I've been saying that since Nixon was impeached. It's steadily gotten much worse since then. I won't ever underestimate the stupidity of the American voter again.
Unfortunately, too much damage to the country has already been done and continues. The best I can hope for is that the dems stymie the repubs in congress as best they can. Then I hope that the dems can take control of congress in the 2018 elections. And, finally, either remove Drumpf by impeachment or beat him in the 2020 election.
Must have been low information voters who voted for Drumpf. I can say that I was never influenced directly or indirectly by any propaganda or fake news in the 2016 election. That is why I am troubled by what that election says about our democracy and its population.
