(58,785 posts)Anyone else would do it a little more respectably sounding, of course, but if you go check right wing media and forums where "the base" talk you're going to find a very different view has been developed of this mayor. By the way, they're also reporting and believing that San Juan teamsters were refusing to drive trucks to distribute supplies, disgusting beyond words but it's being believed and repeated.
By the way, although I believe "the base's" views are scum and not worth the electronic 1s and 0s it takes to express them, AND I would never doubt the mayor's sincerity, AND the people of San Juan were and are in very serious trouble, some things I've heard from her directly and from others there make me want to hold on a full-out belief in her statements and competence. Sincere, yes, but in her distress she may been not have presented a dependable picture of what was happening in San Juan.
Attack the pubs all you want, but maybe use other representations to back up your arguments. And your beliefs?

(28,979 posts)I think she's entitled to be concerned. And on the edge of hysteria. We need to support not tear down like Trump has done.
She lost her home. She's living in a shelter. Red tape is slowing down the process. Tax collection at the point of entry. Overcharging to get off the island by plane. Threats to take passports for those who manage to get to the US unless they repay the plane fare. Humanitarian aid with a pricetag.
I think you and many of the rest of us on DU would be hoarse from shouting. She's been on the ground from the start. We are on the sidelines.
My nephew an ex-lobster boat captain from Massachusetts is in there with the Red Cross. He says it looks like a nuke hit the towns and villages, that no one is getting in to help. They have supplies but can't get to the areas of need. A slow horrific disaster unfolding. Trump's Katrina. Only worse. When they do get in some of the smaller outlying areas just a few miles from San Juan, the people report no other contact with first responders or FEMA.
We need to cut her some slack. Point fingers later.
Trump praises the male governor while blasting the female mayor.
The president tweeted. "The fact is that Puerto Rico has been destroyed by two hurricanes," he said on Twitter. "Big decisions will have to be made as to the cost of its rebuilding!" WTF???

(58,785 posts)to show bodies floating around in that water? That if they could only find one body they'd display it on every news program all day every day? Sure people died during and after the hurricane from injuries and somevafter from needs not met. Just maybe things are bad but not as bad as her emotings suggest.
390,000 people in San Juan's city limits, 3.4 million people on an island ravaged by the worst hurricane ever. It's a matter of perspective, and maybe just look at other reports to develop one that approaches reality.
Of course I"m not going to "just stop" suggesting we be competent masters of our own minds.

I lived in Guam as a kid when we had a storm that flattened the island. The military SAVED the day. The local authorities were overwhelmed. On military bases, we cleared our own streets of debris very quickly, but we had water trucks twice a day, free food distribution at mess halls and commissaries, massive collections of clothing and bedding for others, etc. All efficiently coordinated by democratic administration.
Two lives lost in initial typhoon. 80% of homes damaged or destroyed.
Puerto Ricans are in survival mode all over their island. Let us hope we do NOT see what you describe. Let us hope there are not more casualties after the fact that we have yet to see.
How easy it is for you to dismiss the deaths of even one individual as simply not that bad! I am disgusted by that response. When we have the resources and manpower to prevent such deaths, our military needs to make sure they do the job and to hell with the red tape and other BS.
Send in General Honore. I trust him to tell it like it is. I trust my nephew who is posting when he can find cell service. Not you. Unless of course you have your boots on the ground there to tell me differently.

(58,785 posts)the support Texas and Florida did, and I believe this is for completely amoral, venal political reasons devoid of altruism.
Where we part is in whether it's appropriate to listen only to the passionate cries of one official and believe them implicitly without seeking other sources to develop a more detailed, rounded picture.
Just one of the things that made me wonder was a football player's wife on TV saying the mayor asked her to "send people!," "lots of people!," very emotionally. Not plumbers, not electricians, lab techs, not truck drivers, just "people." Literally, "people" unspecified.
This from the mayor of 390,000 "people, at least adults half out of work and needing food, water, housing, medical care organized relief projects to join. Other reports say people are pitching in eagerly when they see something they can help with. What I would expect to hear from her might be that she had organized citizen work crews but needed materials for them to work with and people with skills in short supply, but instead just a passionate "people!" "send people!" This wouldn't meet my standard for someone I'd appointed to head up the subcommittee setting up the tables for a PTA bake sale.

(58,785 posts)There are diminishing returns on passionate emoting, and in this case it didn't work that way for everyone. I had tears in my eyes the first time and doubts welling instead as time went on. Confidence in her certainly wasn't encouraged by her backing off somewhat on her statements the very next morning, when believers might have expected reports of many more people dying and the whole city 12 hours closer to widespread "genocide." Nor did the statements of other officials on that island that in some cases specifically did not support hers inspire confidence.
As for those who need to be "swept away" with hyperbole to care, should the media pander to them by filling news programs with emotional hyperbole instead of facts?
Critical thinking. More needed these days than ever.

(12,448 posts)over someone ON THE GROUND, wading through water with a bullhorn, and desperately pleading for help for her people? You have NO IDEA what the "football player's wife" heard from the mayor. Except, of course, you take her word as gospel because that's what you WANT to believe, that she, and not the mayor, meets YOUR "standards."
Try, just TRY, to picture yourself as someone responsible for 390,000 people, scared that there will be deaths because of lack of water, food, and medical equipment. You're going to sit behind your keyboard and type that you would be "emoting"? You're going to type that you wouldn't be scared and begging for help? My god.

(58,785 posts)calling for others to join in to help. She and her husband were already working in PR relief -- with the mayor, had already been to PR after Maria, came back and were both about to leave for PR again. The statement she related came after she asked the mayor what she would be able to do if they wrote her a check for $25K earmarked for some kids who needed medical attention. The mayor said it wasn't money that was needed right now, don't send money, send people, they need people.
This is all making me wonder why some enterprising person hasn't created a left-wing Fox. The simple message that people should apply critical thinking to their viewing is rejected out of hand.
By the way, psychologists say the typical politically engaged person bypasses thinking altogether to go straight to pre-programmed emotion when political subjects come up. Might give that one thought also.
Are most of US actually effectively stupider and MORE ignorant than the average person who pays no attention to politics?

Any suggestion that she might not be perfect thus becomes evil and is not just rejected out of hand, but the person who spoke becomes an enemy.
How is this different from the right-wing's behavior, and intellectual vacuum, when their icons, such as Trump, are criticized?
It's no different.
That's out of a population of 3.4 million.
I heard better numbers for the hospitals on TV today, more than that 55% substantially up but not all services restored.
These numbers are undoubtedly improved by now, after another full day of impending genocide. The recorded death count is still at 16, but of course will rise substantially into the dozens, perhaps hundreds.
NastyRiffraff
(12,448 posts)trying to prove your "point." NOBODY is saying there hasn't been improvement; it would be very odd if there hadn't been, largely because of the people of Puerto Rico, not because of typists trashing a Puerto Rican mayor.

(5,611 posts)Fucking Fox News is saying that is a horrific catastrophe and showing all of the people stranded in sweltering buildings without water or electricity or medicine or food -- saying that gas lines are still over four hours long. And a DU poster wants to sow doubt about the fucking mayor?! Claim that we need "more sources" to determine if the images before our eyes are "true?"
They, as in Fox fucking News (showing more compassion than a DU member?), highlighted one story as it was said there are thousands just like this one -- of an elderly woman with a broken hip who is trapped on the seventh floor of her building as the elevator does not work. Her two elderly relatives are doing their best to bring her water and food. She has urinated on her sheets. She is crying and moaning in agony without proper medications. No washing machines to clean sheets. Medications not available as THOUSANDS ARE SUFFERING. I think some people have no fucking idea and frankly it makes me sick. They should retreat back into their fantasy worlds this Sunday. I'd like to say a lot more...
Just fuck.

It doesn't matter, in a way, what it is each day, or what happens tomorrow
It goes much deeper than that...
It is NON-LINEAR WARFARE.
PR, POC, immigrants, NFL, library books, grocery store selling diapers on the wrong day.. nothing matters to the enemy in this battle... EXCEPT disruption... disruption of society. disruption of government.
It is intended to be too much for a person to absorb... exhausting, distraction-- THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT. Confusion, get people to just give up.
It is a tactic to bring down western democracy!!
Well, WE WON"T GIVE UP.
We need to deal with the day to day insanity, but at the same time, and maybe even MORE importantly, keep our eyes focused on the big picture of what is happening..
