Peter N. Kyros, Democratic congressman from Maine, dies at 86

Peter N. Kyros, a Maine Democrat who represented Portland in the U.S. House of Representatives for four terms and became a consultant and lawyer in Washington, died July 10 at George Washington University Hospital. He died a day before his 87th birthday.

He had respiratory failure, said his son-in-law, Thomas Schaufelberger.

Mr. Kyros was a lawyer in private practice in Portland before serving in the House from 1967 to 1975.

In Congress, he served on the old House Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee and the old Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee. He helped oversee legislation involving conservation and wildlife protection, and promoted the passage of a law establishing a 200-mile offshore commercial fishing boundary.
