My sister died yesterday. We need healthcare for all.

I have previously posted about my older sister's battle with colon cancer, and the fact that she couldn't get the real treatment she needed because of money.

She was 72 and had Medicare coverage, but for whatever reason (financial, most likely), she did not have a supplemental policy for her 20% copay. The 20% of the prescribed chemo treatment was going to run over $25,000 per month and my family could not afford that. I don't think there are many families who could. She had income just over (seriously like less than $100) that disqualified her for Medicaid.

She lived in a rural area in South Texas with limited medical care availability. Very Trump supportive area. There were issues related to her residency because that limited her access to teaching hospitals in other counties, etc. She was just a statistic to all of the bureaucrats that we spoke with. Just another faceless, dying American.

We were able to scrape together the funds necessary to get her on a less-than desirable, but at least something, oral chemo regiment. That gave her about five months.

She died in the richest country in the world because she couldn't get the right medical care. That makes me furious, and it makes me want to puke my guts out. How can anyone say they are prolife and see something like this happening without compassion and desire for change? Republicans are unfeeling.

We need universal healthcare. No one else should have to die because they are poor and/or limited by county residency. We are the UNITED States of America and we need healthcare available for all regardless of where they live.

As for me, I'll thank you in advance for just allowing me the opportunity to seethe about this publicly. I loved my sister very much and I'll miss her. But I would be lying if I said I wasn't relieved that her suffering is over. I'll be okay after some time has passed.

Please fight for healthcare for all so that no other family has to go through this. Please never give up. It's the right thing to do. I'll be there with you. And please keep recruiting Democratic voters because the world lost a good Democrat yesterday.

Peace.

And the heartless, evil moneygrubbers that run the GOP want people like your sister to die, so that GOP donors like the Koches can increase their wealth by 10%.

If you want, I can post a picture of the Koches or their political director so people can see who to blame for shitty healthcare in America. But you probably just want to mourn right now.

27. Yes, Skittles, that's what we understood.

With full disclosure her cancer was advanced and she would have needed multiple medicine regimes. But we were told by her attending oncologist to expect that she would have several years left had his suggested regime been followed. When that was not possible, he gave her the less expensive oral meds with lesser affect against the cancer.

We were never given a total dollar number, only the share she would have been responsible for so I cannot fully answer your question. But that is how I understood the money situation.

That cost alone is staggering and we certainly need to do more to get drug companies in line.

82. I unfortunately have information about chemo...

First, hamsterjill, my deepest condolences to you and yours. It's a crime.

My SO, DUer OneGrassRoot, is going through chemo now.

ObamaCare saved her life though, for sure. She went to the ER in late July on a Sunday, they thought she was dying (they admitted her and the nurse asked if she wanted to see a pastor!), and had surgery two days later on Tuesday to remove a mass in her colon. Had she taken the typical outpatient route, it probably would have taken six months to get to diagnosis and then surgery. She said she had ever test known to humankind that Monday; having not had insurance for years, she hadn't had any of the recommended diagnostics for people over 50. Going to the ER no doubt saved her life.

Fortunately, surgery removed it all, but the protocol given the stage is six months of chemo.

Don't know how much the monthly chemo costs are, but I can tell you that Neulasta alone (given to increase white blood cell counts) is $15k-18k PER ADMINISTRATION. She has chemo every two weeks and Neulasta is part of that regimen. The cost for everything else must be extraordinary.

29. Jill, so sorry about your sister, and especially sorry

that she could not afford treatment that would keep her alive.
The story I'm about to tell you is meant to emphasize your last paragraph:
My husband of 47 years died a month ago today. He had been feeling ill for some months and had seen many specialists, the last one being an oncologist who ordered several tests (bone marrow biopsy, scans etc.) to determine lymphoma. Having died very suddenly of a stroke in the middle of the night at home in bed, he was spared the treatment options being suggested -- radiation, chemo, steroids etc.
All of this is to say that all his doctor apps, hospital visits, visiting nurse over 3 months, tests etc. cost him $0, because we are fortunate enough to live in a country that believes healthcare is a right, and not just a privilege. Oh, we were out of pocket $45 for each of 2 ambulance rides. His final one was to the hospital for an official doctor's pronouncement, but there was no charge for that.

Nine years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Besides the diagnostic tests, I underwent 2 surgeries, 6 chemo treatments, 10 shots of neupogen between each treatment (which my darling husband gave me), anti-nausea meds and steroids, visiting nurse once a week for almost 3 months, umpteen doctor visits, blood tests and so on. This also cost me $0.

I have several American pals who were going through the same thing (we met on-line) and, while most of them had great employer-based insurance, a few of them did not. Some are still struggling to pay off their bills because of a horrid disease that doesn't choose you based on your ability to pay.

To all DUers -- do what Jill says: Please, please, please fight for healthcare for all. It's just criminal that the most successful country in the world lets so many of its citizens suffer and die.

39. My son

died at 45, for lack of healthcare. He was laid off and could not afford $600 monthly for insurance. He kept hoping he would be called back to work. He died. I have Medicare and a supplement, and STILL get bills . Medicare does not pay for eye refraction, so the supplement will not pay, either. I am about to go through a series of shots to both eyes for Macular Degeneration. If I want the very best shot, I have to pay $75.00 per shot. Then the mandatory eye drops cost $98 last time and likely will be over $100 by now. Deepest sympathy on the loss of your sister. WHEN will people see that the gop caters only to the rich?

44. thanks for writing that post

It certainly is illuminating. It's bad enough to be hit by a disease, but to have to also worry about the cost of treatment? That, to me, is unbearable.

I'm sorry you had to go through both your own disease but also the experience of your husband's. I don't know how people get through these phases of their life, but I guess there is no choice.

In your last paragraph, I think you should add an adjective: "It's just criminal that the most financially successful country in the world...." The U.S. is financially successful, but millions of people in this country think life is all about the dollar. Being successful financially. There's so much more to it than that, and to be fair, millions of others realize that, too.

Another example of how we are not successful is how our government has been hijacked for the purposes of big business. I do not consider this a democracy anymore, so there's another failure of the U.S. Drug problems, racism, inequality, and more. We are not even keeping up with nations like China in becoming energy independent.

and sister too. My sister could easily be writing the same thing for me in a few years if they get rid of the ACA with subsidies. My healthcare with the ACA and subsidies is 35% of my income (for now anyway...45 is sabotaging it). My disability income is about $75 a month too much to qualify for Medicaid. I have been fighting hard to keep affordable healthcare and will keep it up until I am too ill to continue.

52. Peace be with you, Hamsterjill. There's far too many voices never heard.

Sorry to hear of your loss - walk with her memory every day! Lost my mom to colon cancer, even though she had good treatment at Vanderbilt. Hers was the aggressive kind unfortunately, that kept coming back.

We agree with you totally that there's no excuse for lack of proper care, as folks have in other civilized nations. We have a portion of our populace that don't give a damn about their fellow man - yet claim to be Christian. The best things we can do in your sister's memory is to donate to the Cancer Society and fight like hell to win back Congress.

One (of many) things that hurts very deeply for me is that Republican policies most often hurt those having the least-heard voices - the sick, the poor, the disabled, and our minorities. These simply are not good people in the GOP.

65. I will seethe with you...

...were it not for Medicaid, I would be either dead or sleeping on the street.

66. I'm mad for your loss.

It's disgusting what this country does to it's own.

My heartfelt sympathy

We can and must do better.

67. I am so sorry for your loss

I think I told you before how my dad has had stage 4 colon cancer for 4 years. Itís still controlled, but it is a constant worry. He has had a lot of problems with the side effects of the treatments. I feel heartbroken by your story. We need to take the profit motive out of health care so that everyone gets the care they need. A country that ignores the health of its citizens will never be a prosperous one.

68. I'm so sorry.

very time I go to the doctor I am grateful for both Medicare and my supplemental policy, even though it costs me about 25% of my total Social Security (and Part D another chunk -- I honestly try not to even look at the numbers).

70. I'm so sorry, Jill

I've been filling out my Medicare papers. My questions are (1) How do people understand what to choose? and (2) How does the average person on Social Security afford it? Your sister's choice isn't unusual, I'm sure, sadly.

74. Single payer

is the only way to fix this for everyone. I will ONLY vote for democrats that say and PROVE they support single payer. There is no reason in the world as to why we currently do not have single payer. It'll happen some day. And I'm hoping real soon. I am so sorry for your loss.

75. There'a a reason I live in Minnesota.

Of course, comparing living in an isolated rural area versus living in a large urban area with world class teaching Hospitals and Universities is not a fair one, but we already had most of the provisions of O care a long time ago.and programs to insure people like your sister that were much better than medicare. You couldn't pay me enough to live in any of the former slave states even though I love visiting there, playing there, and meet wonderful people there. Quite simply, they are third world countries run by a corrupt oligarchy for the benwfit of the wealthy. Texas is one of the worst. The bottom quintile pays a higher tax rate than the top one.I had the displeasure of doing business with a mrtgage servicing company in Texas recently. They continually lied and broke the law. Never even heard back from their paid off AG. Took the Minnesota AG's office to get them moving. This is the Republican dream. Everything exxpendable to capital.

76. The entire healthcare system in the US is a scam, sham and a folly.

Sucking nearly 20% of the GDP from our economy and delivering poor, inadequate, incomplete, price gouging performance is criminal.

77. Words cannot express

The pain I know you have, Jill. The only good thing to say about a debilitating illness is that you have more time to say goodbye.

I had two Type 1 diabetic sisters, ages 9 and 12 when diagnosed. They/we were so fortunate they made it into their 50's. Without Medicaid and Medicare to pay literally millions of dollars in healthcare costs over the years, that would have never happened.

78. Hamsterjill, I am so sorry, my dear

And your words are so true.

The insurance and healthcare in the US is such a maze and labyrinth. It is hard even for the professionals in the industry to understand and to coordinate.

The only way is single payer.

I am so sorry your sister passed away because of the faulty system. This should not be so.

I am so sorry that she had to endure the pain, suffering and system failure.

We should not have to choose between utilities, food etc or more insurance policies.

I am sending my best thoughts and prayers to you.

This is the American tragedy.

79. Much love to you, hamsterjill, and many hugs.

Thank you for sharing this personal agony - we need to hear these stories because you're absolutely right - we need to fight for decent affordable healthcare! For EVERYONE!

We ALL MUST make sure that your sister did NOT die in vain. And that your sorrow will NOT go unheard and ignored.

This is one for that jerk Raul Labrador, R-ID, who had the gall to declare at a town hall meeting awhile back that "no one dies if they don't have healthcare." Oh yeah? Hey, Raul, why don't you ask hamsterjill about that sometime?
