Teacher tells students to speak "American," not Spanish because that's what troops are fighting for

I don't blame those students for walking out of class! Trump's Murica!

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. — A 25-second video clip recorded inside a classroom at New Jersey's Cliffside Park High School has struck up a controversy on social media, according to WPIX.

“…men and women are fighting. They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish. They are fighting for your right to speak American,” a teacher can be heard saying to her class.

Students in Cliffside Park, a diverse community with a large number of Spanish-speaking students, immediately reacted to the comment. At least one even walked out.

"You're being racist," that student can be heard saying on the video. "I know how to speak English."

I ask because she told them they need to speak American. There is no such language as American. Yes, ENGLISH is our main language but our country is made up of many many languages including SPANISH. I would want her out of the school teaching my children because she obviously does not know shit. I really, really hope she is not an English teacher.

I almost got fired at work once over this type of crap. I was sent in to the nursing supervisor because a nurse told her I had cursed her out for no reason. She said would you like you explain why you said " Fuck you" to the nurse? So I told her I was in a room with 2 Latino girls that were busy working doing their jobs and talking to each other in Spanish when the nurse walked by and in a raised voice yelled at them " Speak English or go back home!" ..so I told her " Fuck you it's not even any of your business even if they wanted to speak Klingon it would not be any of your business. They are speaking privately to one another in a room that you were not in in their mother tongue, so just fuck off!" The administrator smiled at me and said " Next time try to choose your words better. You can go now."

not racist. The teacher discriminates against the culture and language of non-english speakers. She also doesn't know that american is the condition of being native or common to the Americas which is not necessarily the United States "of" America.

As far as people fighting for the right to speak "American", Spanish is american and european just as English is american and european.

Either this teacher is trying to teach some deep lesson on discrimination and totally messed up her point and we don't hear the end of her point on this clip, or she's just full of stupid, narrow-minded, nationalist BS.

14. Texas Gov Ma Ferguson: if English was good enough for Jesus, ok for Texas children

William Safire in his On Language column, May 1982 New York Times quoted Reverend Swain citing former Governor Ma Ferguson , who served after her husband Governor Pa Ferguson, when the issue of Spanish being used in Texas schools arose: Not while I am Governor! If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it is good enough for Texas children.

I have to admit she made a compelling case.
