Astronomer Phil Plait did a TED talk in Boulder, CO about this.

Google, "TED Phil Plait" and you'll find it.

Also, there's an incredible organization entitled the B612 Foundation whose sole purpose is to save the planet from meteoric or cometary destruction. Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart is one of the principals.

These people are very smart and they are literally trying to save the world.

Cool stuff. Very cool stuff.

iPhones aren't the best platform to post these things. Dr. Plait's TED talk is fun, but scary. After all, he is the Bad Astronomer. And he did write a very successful book entitled, Death From the Skies: These are the Way the World Will End.

A great read, with a lot of great science, but it's no wonder that he's called the Bad Astronomer.

I am a huge fanboy of Phil Plait. He's funny; and he's very smart. Check out his TED talk. It is very cool.

I don't think he is either....I think he is from Ceti Alpha 5 (6), and under control of a Ceti eel larvae...same with his wife.

Wish I had a pic of Ensign Checkov here (as played by Walter Koenig). Although I very much liked Anton Yelchin as Checkov in the last Star Trek movie.

If only JJ Abrams hadn't destroyed the entire Star Trek universe in the attempt to resurrect it. Making Checkov a 17 year old was trying to revive Wesley Crusher. And don't get me started about Keenser, which can only be the Star Trek version of Ewoks, a future kid toy product placement.

I love Star Trek, but that movie utterly sucked. Not for the acting, which was fairly good, but for the damage it did to the franchise. Star Trek has never been Star Wars, until now. Fuck JJ Abrams and his abortion of a movie.

Sorry about the rant.

Are they making a new movie or TV series for the sci-fi channel? Fwiw, I enjoyed the last movie but disturbed by plot segments which diverted from known Star Trek History. Figured next movie or next two movies would make things right for us older folks, we don't care much for some kinds of change. No, not a Xenorascist (is that a word even?), but Uhura and Spock? Give me a break! How could Spock be that....tender. That part was just wrong! I grew up with both Kirk and McCoy regularly trying to punk Spoc into showing emotion.
