We decided to skip the movie.

So a few of you know Mrs. Robb and I moved back to the Denver area about four years ago. I won't go into exhaustive detail, but we had a real good chance of having been at the theater in Aurora last night.

We'd talked around the idea of getting her mom to drive up from her place (about an hour away) and watch our little girl -- actually, put her to bed and let grandma just sit up -- for a big treat sort of date night. We both wanted to see the new Batman, and we don't see a lot of movies. The midnight premiere would've worked great -- I knew I could get tickets, we saw Avatar the same way.

Ultimately we bagged on the idea; too much for grandma's gas, too much late-night antics with Mrs. Robb having to work Friday. Just one of those things. Last night we went to bed, I kidded her about how much fun other folks were having getting ready for Batman to start.

My heart is with those people. My daughter got extra hugs just now. Don't take one damn day for granted, everyone.

Wow, the randomness of life, huh? My husband and I were on our honeymoon when that happened. Actually, it was a news and action-packed 2 weeks. We live in Michigan so we decided to take a 2 week road trip to Glacier National Park, the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Badlands, etc. That massacre happened 4 days after our wedding (married on Bastille Day ) and we had just gotten to Montana. Then that crazed mountain man father/son abducted Kari Swenson very close to Glacier NP, destroying her Olympics bid in the biathalon; Denise Williams resigned as Miss America in disgrace (I thought she was unfairly ousted); and we watched Geraldine Ferraro as she was nominated to be the first woman candidate for VP. We actually watched the convention while sitting in a red heart-shaped bath tub/jaccuzzi in the Honeymon Suite in the Sheridan, Wyoming Holiday Inn, LOL. Good times! We've made it to 28.

I once had a "what if" moment myself. My family and I left a theater, a Sherlock Holmes play where Leonard Nemoy was Holmes, and walked a half a block. A bomb went off a half block in the other direction.

Quite sobering. All I can say is that our number wasn't up on that evening.

Take in a showing at a complex where Grandma can take your little girl to a different flick -- maybe Ice Age -- and you and your wife can enjoy the end of what has been a great set of films so far.

We can't let other people's crazy ruin our lives.

there is a larger point: In the "greatest nation in the world" do we now have to worry daily that
ourselves or are loved ones are going to be brutally murdered? WHY is this pathetic state of affairs
acceptable?

Problem: law enforcement in good at being REactive; they suck at being PROactive.

I propose a 'War on Nuts' in our nation, specifically the armed variety.

what law enforcement is doing now is feeble and unacceptable.. sorry, I don't buy the notion
they are "powerless" to stop these mass killings.. that is a very weak excuse

A war on nuts wouldn't have turned up this guy. Or Ted Kaczysky either, for that matter. It would quickly turn into a persecution of oddballs, and we've already got plenty of that.

No thank you.

so you're OK with "oddballs" being heavily armed, probably on meds (there's word out Mr.
Holmes took 100mg of Vicoden to prep for his "Joker" role) and running amok
among us??

LOL... this is beyond absurd. thanks for nothing

No, I'm not OK with oddballs being heavily armed and looking for an opportunity to create mayhem. However, I invite you to draft a law defining oddball such that tragedies can be prevented. Go ahead, tell us what an oddball is and how you'd stop them before they do any harm.

I suppose this is what it must be like to live in Israel. Even the people who got out alive will NEVER be the same again. I'm watching some of the survivors talk about what they experienced. They will carry this with them as long as they live.

Glad you guys stayed home. I bet this stays with you for the rest of your life, as well - the horror and shocking irony of "what might have been." That has to be a staggering weight to carry, and you were among the luckiest ones, thank God.

Damn. Just damn. It's just a roll of the dice every day.
