(13,081 posts)Maybe a DESIRE, but too many people feel a NEED. Theres a big difference.
Shootin shit is fun. Targets, cans in the desert, old cars. Im not going to lie.
But if you feel like the only way you can protect yourself is with an AR 15? Either youre a coward drastically overestimating the threats against you, or youve got problems way too big for an AR15 to solve.

(13,081 posts)All inherited from various family members, some weirder than others? (Like, what the fuck am I going to do with an Uzi? Who buys one of these things? And then leaves it in the box, but uses more expensive guns?)
I sold many of them years ago, about the time my kid was old enough to start walking and getting into shit. I kept a few because I felt I had to. Theyre fully functional, or would be if all the parts were in the same building, but there are clear instructions in my will on how to reassemble them and which museum I want them donated to.
The only one I kept for self-defense I literally took apart piece by piece after Newtown. I threw one piece in the garbage every day. Did I lose money? Yeah. Was it a futile gesture? Probably. But I know that of the five hundred million firearms in the streets, it wont be MINE thats responsible for yet another tragedy.
It was selfish, stupid, and irresponsible to keep it as long as I did.
And I was making the world a shittier place. One more gun is one more piece of fuel in the forge of the American Gun Nut. Weve been letting billion dollar industries write the regulations and the propaganda, and American gun culture has, in the last couple of decades, become something really perverse.

(3,803 posts)I grew up in a small town, and my best friend's uncle was the mayor -- he had a fucking arsenal. He'd take us kids out shooting targets when we were 12 or so. I got to fire a few fully automatic weapons. I loved it.
I've never felt the need to take it any further, and I have never personally owned a gun.
But I still look back on those target shooting expeditions fondly.
Nevernose
(13,081 posts)And, like I said, all of my guns were inherited from dead people. I got rid of them (except for a couple that are literally suitable for, and willed to, a museum).
Shootin' shit is fun.
I don't think people really think about when they're carrying it too far or when they're promoting a national culture that's simply unhealthy. Never considered what the "practice" part of "target practice" really means (hint: y'all ain't practicing for more paper targets. That's why it's called "practice." . Have you noticed how virtually all of the recent "lone wolf" mass shooters have been wearing "tactical gear?" It seems to be all of the crazies, at least.
Too many of these people are running around the desert, dressed up like soldiers, running "militia" websites, listening to "alternative" facts, and playing Army Man. Fucking overgrown man-children.
I think eventually, for some of these boy-men, they get tired of waiting for their hero fantasies to come true and instead decide to be the villain.

(21,646 posts)Devin Patrick Kelley has been identified as the gunman who killed at least 24 people at a church in Texas, a U.S. official tells The Daily Beast. Kelley, 26, was a resident of New Braunfels, a suburb of San Antonio, according to public records. Kelley was married and Kelley's mother-in-law listed a P.O. box in Sutherland Springs as a mailing address. San Antonio police reportedly raided Kelley's home on Sunday evening. A LinkedIn account appearing to belong to Kelley describes him as serving in the U.S. Air Force from his 2009 high-school graduation until 2013, after which he briefly taught at a summer Bible school. On a now-deleted Facebook account, Kelley recently displayed an AR-15 style gun, ABC News reports.

And if a person on Facebook claims to know one or more victims, then they know the beliefs of the shooter?
And he is an atheist Sunday school teacher?

It says he's from New Braunfels. That's 35 miles north of Sutherland Springs. He either drove or he's relocated. They said on the news that they are taking a canine unit to his home to look for explosives.

Reports state he was tracked down and shot by authorities after he shot everyone in the church in Sutherland Springs. Currently the death toll is at 27.
His profile banner is a picture of a gun he recently posted about affectionately.

(50,567 posts)There's some stuff on the Internet that points out he could have bought an 80-percent complete lower receiver (which is not complete enough to qualify as a "gun" therefore doesn't have to be transferred over a Form 4473) and used a drill press to finish it. I'm seeing reports that he had a "Ruger" AR-15. Ruger only sells complete guns, which DO have to be transferred over Form 4473.
A court-martial conviction carries the same weight as a felony conviction, and it follows you out into the civilian world...which means he couldn't have legally purchased a gun. Watch it turn out he bought his rifle from a garage sale.
I'm also a little surprised at his characterization of discharge. In almost all cases, conviction at general court-martial (which is how you get dishonorably discharged) gets you sent to Leavenworth for a few years. This guy gets a DD and is walking the streets right away? Color me shocked.

(50,567 posts)It's a little creepy sitting here knowing that seven days after that video was made, a lot of those people were killed.
They looked nice enough...just small town people doing their weekly duty to their Lord and Savior, like millions of other people do all over the country. It's hard to even imagine why someone would just decide to walk into a building and blow people away for the hell of it.

(50,567 posts)We are NOT trained to blow anyone away for the hell of it. You don't blow the enemy away for the hell of it, you don't blow that asshole who just cut you off in traffic away for the hell of it, and you sure as fuck don't blow a whole church full of innocent bystanders away for the hell of it. Blowing people away for the hell of it is My Lai Massacre shit.
Making this particular murder even more senseless: the shooter was a supply technician in the Air Force. He wasn't out there walking patrol seeing carnage and bombings every day. He had an office job. He sat in a stockroom issuing floor wax and bed linens.
If I had to speculate on a cause, I'd look at the relationship between the minister of the church he decimated and the shooter's family. Devin Kelley lived in New Braunfels, which is 35 miles from the church he shot up. There is SOME reason that man drove that far that early in the morning to commit a mass murder. If he just wanted to kill a bunch of people, he would have been better off NOT going to Sutherland Springs. The population of his home town is 74,000. The population of Sutherland Springs is 362. Thinking out loud...we know he loved his children. Is there a possibility his ex was trying to get his parental rights stripped (he wasn't exactly Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy) and Kelley thought the preacher had something to do with it?

(50,567 posts)Our shooter was no infantryman. He was Air Force, which, with very few exceptions, does not run around killing people with rifles. He was also supply, which even in the Marines doesnt run around killing people with rifles.
Plus, all the killer veteran stuff needs to end anyway. He was trying to kill his mother-in-law.

(11,514 posts)I got restraining order but they are pretty useless. I had to leave my home for awhile until things settled down.
I am not the type to take violence I immediately left but was threatened he would kill me if I took kids.
Now many years later, kids grown up doing well, ex is clean and doing well. But could have gone real bad.
After I got restraining order he broke into house and painted in red weird stuff, reminded me of Manson and scared the crap out of me. I hid for weeks.
