23-year-old Latina trounces GOP incumbent who defended Trumps sexual assault
Crystal Murillo, Aurora's newest city council member
Murillos family moved to the United States two decades ago from Mexico. She became the first member of her family to graduate high school, and then college, earning a bachelors degree from the University of Denver.
She was inspired to run after Trumps win last November, saying his electoral victory was the catalyst for her decision to get involved in politics.
But the more I looked at my own city and my own community, the more I realized that there was a legitimate reason for me to run in Aurora, she said. Our city council is made up entirely of older, white council members the community here isnt reflected.

Signaling a burgeoning youth movement in local Democratic politics, 23-year-old Crystal Murillo won a seat on the traditionally conservative Aurora, Colorado, city council on Tuesday.
In the process, she ousted a Republican incumbent and fervent Donald Trump supporter.
Her win was part of a larger Democratic mosaic of victories that unfolded Tuesday across the country, as women in particular, and newcomers in general, secured victory after victory and sent a message to Donald Trumps Republican Party.
Along with Murillos, Nicole Johnston and Allison Hiltz also secured victories in the Aurora race.
All three women are graduates of Emerge Colorado, which is part of a nationwide organization that trains Democratic women on how to launch successful political campaigns. Since it was founded in 2002, the group has trained more than 2,500 women across the country.

You are valuable and powerful. You are eminently qualified and capable. And I cannot wait to see how you use your unique gifts and skills to make your community, our country, and our world a better place."

(30,481 posts)As the first Latino Chair of the DNC and the proud son of immigrants, I couldnt be prouder of what we accomplished last night. These victories represent a triumph for American values, for the Latino community, and for the enduring promise of the American Dream. And they send a loud and clear message to Donald Trump: We will not live in fear. We will fight back. And we will win.
In Virginia, we are proud to have helped Elizabeth Guzman and Hala Ayala make history by flipping red seats and becoming the first two Latinas elected to the House of Delegates.
Latinos were also elected in Georgia, where Deborah Gonzalez flipped a red seat in the state House, and in Massachusetts where Andy Vargas is becoming one of the youngest state representatives in the states history.
I also want to congratulate Cathy Murillo and Michelle De La Isla, first Latina mayors of Santa Barbara, California and Topeka, Kansas respectively, and all the new Democratic Latino city council members in Aurora, Colorado; Seattle, Washington; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Boise, Idaho.

(82,849 posts)Now we're getting some positive results. Encouragement for the future, strength for the journey. Glad to see victories being celebrated rather than excuses being proffered, or the "moral victory" of losing by a closer-than-expected margin.

(58,785 posts)I'd read about Emerge before, and how wonderful that these three young women are now part of their local government. Love it!
Thanks for pointing this out, Wwcd. Here's another link to 2017 Emerge candidates, 236 of them, but it's not been updated to show who else won on Tuesday and earlier this year. There's also a long list of other Emerge candidates planning run in 2018 (!), but they really need volunteers to keep their growing list of victories front and center.

I love this OP!

(58,785 posts)It is a professionally run NPO that began with a mission statement and set out to fulfill it. Like Angie's List and at one time Planned Parenthood, and many others.
Now, Indivisible was and is a true, remarkable grassroots phenomenon, with many differently run groups with different "personalities" and purposes springing up all over. I love that! Though the closest viable one and I would be an extremely poor fit, they've held together for most of a year now in a deep-red area, are pretty active, and have reportedly become notorious locally for their obnoxious and disruptive behavior. Almost everyone here is a trumpster, so the only thing I mind is that their boorishness is being touted as an example of how Democrats behave.

(30,736 posts)All the candidates go to see them for Q&A. I have gone a few times. Since I believe in challenging candidates and do not subscribe to their groupthink, many of them despise me. I am always prepared. Their leader respects me and makes the group listen when I ask questions or speak up.
What I question is their naive outlook. Most of them do not understand how party politics work. They do not realize that they need to get to know the Democrats who wield power in our area, and that those people are glad to work with newcomers. They cannot just walk in and demand leadership positions. I do appreciate their activism, however, even if it is unlike mine.
Unfortunately, they will see setbacks. We all will. 2018 may not be the rout for Democrats that we are hoping for. I think this group, and many others, will melt away. I give them two to five years before they disband.

(58,785 posts)it's inevitable that some, even most, will have too much personality, not enough smarts and principle. I contacted probably 4 of the closest listed as forming here and in Florida last winter and they all sounded like big no goes.
What's happening with your group there sounds very interesting. It's obviously had a promising start, but perhaps will end up being seduced and subsumed by the very people it organized to hold accountable? Your pols are smart. Principled, intelligent responses? Or are they following game plans devised by experts to get control and put out these brush fires?
Whatever, you're right of course about most melting away. It's hard to imagine that some won't become enduring, significant local forces though.

Diversity is a democratic strength. Young people came out to vote and said ENOUGH!!!!
If they repeat this in 2018 we will sweep these evil racist/corrupt republican employees of Koch and Mercer out with the trash and take back America!!!!
