I am not an expert on the laws here but I know enough that I can't have one without going to jail so I don't. Full disclosure: I hate hunting animals, don't do it, period. The NYPD does a pretty good job at least in Manhattan of keeping violent crime to low levels so I feel safe for the most part.
How do they manage to do that here legally? How do people feel about it?

(14,337 posts)It is a matter of hearts and minds. Listen to the OP. The majority of NYC residents DON'T WANT to own guns. How do you think NYC HAS the toughest gun laws? Because the people there WANT it that way. Oh, this goes back generations. I was born, raised in Manhattan almost 64 years ago. It was the same then too.

(7,730 posts)The penalty for it here is serious stuff. Enough that I would not mess around and face the possible penalty. It is really the top priority for the NYPD. They let a lot of stuff slide but not that. That and parking violations.
I am personally a little torn about the issue. On one hand I am thankful that I don't hear gunshots every night like when I lived in LA. Then on the other hand there have been some things that have happened in terms of break ins and home invasion type stuff that make me feel helpless if the cops could not get to me in time.
In the end I think I am better off without one. It seems more harm comes from having one around than what protection it could offer me. I still do not understand how only in NYC do they seem to be able to do this. I wish I knew how they do it when most places almost mandate gun ownership.

(69,014 posts)This city doesn't sleep. Especially in Manhattan. We are up and doing just fine, UNARMED at all hours of the day or night.
And we don't vote for Republican presidents.

(7,730 posts)Maybe I am not picking up the sarcasm? I still wish someone knew what loophole or whatever they use to get away with it here.

(7,730 posts)That is really why I posted this in the first place. I don't think it has to be a hot button discussion. In fact I really think arguing is over rated. Does anyone here know how they manage to do it here?
Oh yes, Plaxico is a good example of how not to treat a gun overall. GUN SAFETY is freaking crucial no matter what we think about the right to have one. I know in a lot of places people are allowed to carry but in NYC if you have to carry a gun and you are not a cop or don't have a suitcase full of diamonds you are probably doing something you should think over again.

(7,730 posts)issues. This is my last try. It's a serious question, there are smart people here, please don't let me down. This place has in the past been useful for more than insulting people we don't agree with!
