(9,730 posts)Evidently they lie awake at night trying to think up new and particularly vicious ways to exercise their evil, twisted desires. Licensing slaughter of elephants is what they would think of as "a good first step." What's next? Join the evil Japanese in their murder of whales?

(85,998 posts)...hence, the Obama wildlife dept. order.
report:
The ban follow(ed) a massive ecological disaster at Hwange National Park (in 2013) which saw hundreds of elephants being killed through cyanide poisoning by poachers.
In a statement on its website, the US wildlife department said: Given the current situation on the ground in both Tanzania and Zimbabwe, the Service is unable to make positive findings required under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Endangered Species Act to allow import of elephant trophies from these countries.
Additional killing of elephants in these countries, even if legal, is not sustainable and is not currently supporting conservation efforts that contribute towards the recovery of the species.
...upheld by a Federal judge:
In April 2014, the US Fish and Wildlife Service announced that it was suspending imports of sport-hunted African elephant trophies taken in Tanzania and Zimbabwe through the remainder of 2014. The Service noted: Questionable management practices, a lack of effective law enforcement and weak governance have resulted in uncontrolled poaching and catastrophic population declines of African elephants in Tanzania.
Anecdotal evidence, such as the widely publicized poisoning last year of 300 elephants in Hwange National Park, suggests that Zimbabwes elephants are also under siege.
The moratorium did not sit well with Safari Club International, which sought a preliminary injunction to block it. Safari Club claimed that the inability to import trophies irreparably harmed the vital interests of its members, depriving them of the full enjoyment of the hunt. (The irreparable harm to the dead elephant was not directly addressed, although the Club did claim an interest in sustainable use conservation.)
In June, US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled against the Safari Clubs motion, noting that the import suspension does not prohibit anyone from hunting, and that the inability to bring home a particularly prized souvenir of the hunt does not represent irreparable harm so as to justify an injunction overturning the ban.

(85,998 posts)...you could dismiss ANY of their destructive actions as a 'distraction.'
Fact is, there's isn't any room to focus on just one of their dismantling of protections. More importantly, if you're not outraged, you're not paying enough attention. And if you're not responding forcefully, you're acquiescing to that dismantling.

(14,315 posts)and its happening now.
Other than Don Jr., they dont have much of a stake in hunting elephants and the ivory trade...whereas they DO have a huge investment in tax cuts for the rich and killing the ACA. Its do or die for the Republican party, so they throw out shit like this.
Im not saying its not outrageous; it is. Im not saying we cant be outraged by more than one thing at a time. We can. But their game plan is transparent here, and their desperation is showing.
