Free speech or obscene gesture?
Sheriff Troy Nehls posted a photo of the truck and a sign that reads "F__k Trump and F__k you for voting for him."
In his post, Nehls said there could be charges against the driver: "I have received numerous calls regarding the offensive display on this truck as it is often seen along FM 359. If you know who owns this truck or it is yours, I would like to discuss it with you. Our Prosecutor has informed us she would accept Disorderly Conduct charges regarding it, but I feel we could come to an agreement regarding a modification to it."

In response to the critics, Nehls posted the disorderly conduct law. It reads, in part, "Uses abusive, indecent, profane or vulgar language in a public place, and the language by its very utterance tends to incite an immediate breach of peace."

Memo to @SheriffTNehls:
You can't prosecute speech just because it contains the word "fuck."
The owner of this truck should contact @ACLUTx.

(14,811 posts)I saw a similar sign on a truck in St. Louis. I certainly agree with the sentiment (and I absolutely chuckled when I saw it) but I just don't think profanity should be on display where kids can see it.

(17,305 posts)I realize some people would say, "Kids today see much worse than that on the internet every day."
I like that the driver is targeting Dolt 45 but it is profane. Not ideal for kids.

We may personally not like certain vulgar words to be used around children but IMO that should be a teaching moment for the children's parents (or other adult) to have with their children, not used as an excuse to restrict someone's first amendment rights.
There are times I'm a bit more for restrictions, like when words can cause a riot or stampede therefore potentially physically harming someone, but I don't feel it's the 'governments' job to restrict speech over a word simply because there are some in society who currently find it offensive and dislike its use. Personally I find seeing our flag plastered across someone's privates/butt and the Confederate flag pretty much anywhere except a bonfire much more offensive than the word 'fuck' but I wouldn't restrict an individuals right to communicate what an ignorant/racist jerk they are because of my opinion.
I'd rather explain to my grandchildren that using the word 'fuck' isn't acceptable in polite society than having had to explain to them that a man who thinks it's okay to sexually molest women and "grab them by the pussy" was elected president over a woman who was probably the most qualified candidate that our country has probably ever had.
Considering these are probably Trump voters who complained I find it a bit hypocritical for any of them to complain about anyone else's use of profanity when they voted for the Potty-mouth-in-chief, Trump, who has used profanity in public more than a time or two and whose very behavior has been abhorrent and profane most of his narcissistic, sexist, racist life.

(14,811 posts)Just the propriety. My granddaughter is in second grade and reads. My niece's son is in first grade and reads. I'd prefer not to have to have those "teaching moments", for a while at least. And I'm not a prude by a long shot.

(112,217 posts)He was about to cry a river because he was so upset. He called the truck owner a traitor and a commie.
I snickered because I knew it was protected speech without waiting to read an opinion from an attorney. I wonder what he thought he was fighting for because he is a veteran, but he is clueless at times.
I usually don't look at KHOU except to check the radar.

(3,613 posts)Often people of color (NWA) use the word FUCK as a form of protest and the police try to censor it.
It has nothing to do with why kids might use it or with profanity.

"hang Hillary" isn't?
Many "fuck Obama" stickers aren't?
How about graphic displays of Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbs) pissing on Obama?
All of these, and more can be found all over Harris and Ft. Bend counties here. Fuck trump is where they draw the line at now?
Fuck Trump.

(16,199 posts)Elsewhere, it's legal free speech. Even the DA is saying now that the sheriff didn't contact his Office, stating clearly that this sticker is not disorderly conduct.
