1. it's the dixiecrats again . the republicans would have been better off not appealing to them

and they would have kept some of the coastal and other "liberal republican" types . they would have had more minorities also.

instead they took advantage of democrat losing the dixiecrats after the civil rights laws passed and played to the angry white bigoted types.

and it got them trump.

without one of the major parties appealing to their bigotry they bigots would have turned fringe and maybe a few would have decided to vote on things like the economy, health care, education etc. instead of voting their racial resentment of minorities.

Young people are repulsed by the nativists; and most people don't like their economic policies that favor the rich.

and return America to a functioning democracy again. People don't realise how close to the edge, not just the US but the World, is.

JI7 in Reply 1 is correct in how the Reps got to where they are, however it does seem that the moderate Republicans are walking away, rather than fighting back. Why would a true cancer like the Dixiereps leave the Republican Party of their own accord ? They won't. So maybe the GOP will eventually appear so batshit crazy that it finally puts off moderate loyal Republican voters from turning out for them. I think it was on Nicole Wallace last night that someone said "I don't recognise my party anymore". We can debate why didn't see this a lot sooner but from what we see of moderate Reps, they are jumping ship rather than fighting for their party. That would suggest to me that the GOP is going to become even more loony.

This leaves the space open for a Rational, Determined, United, Organized Democratic Party to save the country from chaos, providing that they are focussed on relentlessly facing down the loony right, wherever they are, to lead.

response that I stop. I will just say that the GOP has purposefully created the environment we are in, both socially(religion and bigotry)and economically, and they may very well pull off their dream of "drowning the government in a bathtub". An environment of ignorance and anger is the perfect soil to create fascism. The right has been working towards this moment ever since FDR got the laws passed that were needed for the New Deal and they are very close to succeeding.......and they will NEVER give up trying. About 30% of any population, by their nature, lean towards authoritarianism so the right just keeps trying to use religion, fear and nationalism to push the few more needed over to their side.

Either way, I think you are right that there is going to be some big shake ups in the parties.

I still would trust neither, nor believe one word out of their lying pieholes, OR ever vote for one.
