(4,139 posts)It's not like there was one holdout for acquittal that a new trial would overcome.

(15,286 posts)Now, if there's a retrial and Menendez is found guilty, a Dem gov will be in place and will appoint the replacement. No political gain to be had.

(4,139 posts)if it was 10-2 for conviction you could count on a retrial.

(2,897 posts)Is Menendez going cruise to re-election on anti-Trump sentiment and the blue tilt? Is this acquittal being looked at/treated as a redemption?

(4,492 posts)Obviously last week we were more worried about it as we didn't want Chris Christie (who already fucked up the late Frank Lautenberg's senate seat) or Kim Guadagno to get their hands on the seat. But after Phil Murphy's victory last week, I'm less worried.
NJ is a very machine oriented state and the county party line (ie Monmouth County Democrats) on the primary ballot is the be all end all. If he does step down, his replacement will need quite a few (out of 21) county lines to be competitive in the primary.
Should he step down, we have a deep bench as there are very few statewide elected offices in NJ.

(5,954 posts)Just like 99.999% of climate scientists are convinced that climate change is real, and caused by the burning of fossil fuels, and the 0.001% of climate scientists who work for Koch-funded 'think tanks' are NOT convinced.
