if someone says something that suggests that a person is a racist, they imply. If someone hears or reads that and deduces that said person is a racist, they infer.

Here's another for you: scan vs. skim. Far too often, people say they didn't have time to read a document so they scanned it. In fact, they skimmed it. It's like skim milk: you skim the surface to remove the fats.

A scanner is a machine that copies documents in great detail. If you scanned an article, you've read it deeply.

I hate the misuse of words but since it's Thanksgiving, let me say this: I'm thankful for all of the words we have. We need them.
