https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/11/the-nationalists-delusion/546356/Trump support was not based on lower class whites suffering economically. His voters had above average income. Many white people don't like minorities, they think the govt is rigged to help minorities at their expense, they think minorities mooch off them, kill and rape them, etc. Trump knows exactly why he won, he knows that his call for a wall to keep out the Mexicans who bring in drugs, who kill and rape us, was all he had to say to get most white votes. And this is not going to change much. Read the article linked above.
The Virginia election did not show a loss of support for Trump. Trump precincts had strong voting for the Republicans. We won big only because we had a big turnout swamping the Trump loyalists.
The Trump folk say and believe they aren't racists. But they are. That's why people vote Trump, racism pure and simple. We have to understand the enemy to defeat it.

(31,261 posts)43% of eligible voters did not vote. My guess is a very large amount of that number was people who vote with us. I think all the unfounded accusations about how the Democratic primary was run along with Sanders and his supporters' conduct once it was clear that Sanders could not win as well as Sanders barely campaigning for Hillary was key to those people staying home. I think the embarrassment that is President Trump woke a lot of people up about the importance of voting in all elections, when people vote, our candidates win.

(46,728 posts)go-to's are emblematic of a racist mind.
For example, a discussion I had with a person, recently, regarding the Trump Tower expose in Panama.
Me: Can you see the conflict of interest? Our law enforcement is targeting minority neighborhoods, presumably to eradicate the drug problem from our country, and now you have a high profile American citizen getting a take from the proceeds in another country. The drug lords dump their money in real estate, and Trump has taken his laundered take.
Other person: Well, it is a very nice building.
So, see, they don't see the racism if they can find a good that came out of it. THAT's racism.

On a side note: Isn't it interesting that we learned about the CIA's part in starting the cocaine train into poor black neighborhoods at the same time same that we learned how the laundered money gets back to the U.S.?
In the long history of this, we might discover that Trump was so bad a president, that crime networks embedded in our society were willing to go scorched earth with revelations in order to bring him down.
