Kate McClure didnt expect to run out of gas on her drive to Philadelphia last month.
And she definitely didnt expect that her misfortune would give her the opportunity to change someone elses life.
Pulled over on the side of I-95, McClure, 27, was approached by a homeless man named Johnny. She was apprehensive at first, but Johnny told her to get back into her car and to lock the doors while he walked to get her help. He went to a nearby gas station, used his last $20 fill a can and brought it back to fill up her car.
Grateful, but without a dollar to repay him, McClure promised she would come back with something.

Okay, well that didnt last very long. We just called Johnny explaining that many people are requesting the donations be left open. He is more than happy with the amount that has been raised so far, and didnt want to seem like he is taking advantage. For the short time that we took it down, though, it is obvious that people still want to donate to this cause. He said that he has more than a few ideas of where this money can go, which he will explain more in detail tonight. You guys continue to amaze us.

(13,781 posts)how do the contributors know that this is a true story?
Even if this is completely legitimate, what about the the next story and the next and the next?
People have been far more dishonest for far less than a quarter of a million dollars.
Come on man, you're basically accusing both her and him of lying and perpetuating a massive fraud. With no evidence to disprove it.
So what if there are more stories ? There's a shiteload of needy people on the streets out there.
Always one. Laters.

(13,781 posts)I think I asked a perfectly legitimate question - how do potential contributors know if it's a true story?
I don't know how these sites work. Is there any sort of vetting process?
Do you not think that some people might lie in order to get thousands of dollars?

Johnny Bobbitt Jr., left, Kate McClure and McClures boyfriend, Mark DAmico, pose at a Citgo station in Philadelphia on Nov. 17. (Elizabeth Robertson/Philadelphia Inquirer/AP)
McClure and DAmico said Bobbitt hasnt told them what he intends to do with all the money, but told CNN that he plans to post a video detailing his plans for the future.
The whole game changed in the last 24 to 48 hours. His expectations changed, and what he wanted to do changed, DAmico said. He has a couple of places in Philadelphia that got him through and got him by. He wants to pay it forward.
His dreams arent champagne and caviar, DAmico said.
