The hysterics about this issue are so incredibly unnecessary.
Repealing the 2nd Amendment does not equate with banning personal gun ownership - it merely eliminates the Constitutional right to own a gun.
Lots of stuff not guaranteed Constitutionally, that we nonetheless are able to legally own - horses, axes, cell phones, boats, syringes, tomato plants, etc. We create laws that regulate the ownership of certain things, to define the privilages, responsibilities, and limitations we see as inherent in the ownership of particular items.
I mean seriously - do we require a Constitutional amendment allowing us to own, for example, a boa constrictor? Nope. But you likely need some type of special permit to own one, and must certainly follow established laws and regulations for pet ownership, regardless.
Guns are not the only dangerous and/or deadly object Americans have granted themselves the legal ability to own - and without Constitutional guarantees for each of them, too.
Imagine that...

(1,831 posts)To gun control and eventual elimination of personal ownership, then nothing we can write here can inform you. Our founding fathers had sound reasons for making gun ownership a right. Because we have a sick society that produces such abberation and violence doesn't change that.
And what if we stopped gun purchases and shut down every arms manufacturer tomorrow? That segment of society, in its sickness, will find other means of manifesting its psychopathic tendencies.

The Framers lived in a world where guns were just another work-a-day tool, used for the most part as a huntung tool, and for defense in a vast, untamed wilderness. If you suggest the Framers intended we have the right to own sub-machine guns and the like, well, then nothing we can write here can inform you otherwise.
And don't forget, folks said the same thing about repealing Prohibition - warning cries resounded, fears shouted long and loud as to how it would lead to the complete breakdown of civilization - oddly (or not) the same arguments were made for enacting Prohibition...
Eliminating a two-hundred year old "right" does not lead directly to the abyss you fear; many radical cultural changews would be required before that particular slope was before us.
Constant vigilance against despotism is required for ALL laws, no matter the subject.
Because they had to fight Indians and bears and wolves and shit like that, and King George didn't understand that.
King George is dead. Wolves and Indians are no longer a threat. A repeal of the second amendment does not preclude bear hunting.

(1,831 posts)who said "Power comes from the end of a gun"?
Whichever, they were on to a very important truth. Wolves, Indians, and King George aside...

(8,317 posts)The confiscation of guns was nowhere in the declaration of independence.
The confiscation of guns was an act by a british general in colonies that were already long ready for war, and it was only in Concorde.

(37,648 posts)I can't imagine that that amendment will ever be repealed.
Even though we could own guns w/o the 2nd amendment, that would give the citizens no consititutional right to own guns, and make it easier to ban them.
That's not gonna happen in this country that was found on violence, the use of guns, and settlement of wild territories without law enforcement. There's a history here that won't go away for a long while.

(24,689 posts)Not really necessary and it wont ever happen.. in our lifetime anyway. But we certainly need to regulate guns and ammunition more strictly and enforce the laws better.

A poll right here on DU shows the progressive community would oppose such a move by more than 70%.
The hurdles to amend the consitutioin, which is how you would repeal the second, are so high there is no way it will ever happen.
The second amendment is here to stay, thank goodness! The anti-gun extremists con go insane every time a tragedy happens, but they will not be able to grab the guns.
