I don't get it.

(16,104 posts)The Senate will be voting on their version tomorrow "sometime late in the night." They need 50 senators plus Pence, but think they have 52.
If they lose 3 Republican votes by tomorrow night, it could stop.
If it passes, it has to go through the reconciliation process aligning the House and Senate versions. Then, both houses vote again.
THIS is what they want to pass before Christmas.

(3,194 posts)Their true base have drawn a line in the sand.
It is up to the repubs to convince as much of the poor & middle-class morons in their party, that this bill does not SUCK, even though it does.
They need the $$$$$$$$$$$ from their true base, however, so they can have it to campaign and try to fool the rest of their so-called base come November 2018.

(14,732 posts)the 51 votes in the Senate they need (and they may actually wind up with a couple of DINO votes as well). Then it's just more make-believe while the House and Senate get together and make a compromise bill that Trump will piss his pants waiting to sign. And then, we're not only fucked from the outset but the (hidden) nasty part is that, because this will force an increase in the defecit of 1.5 Trillion (with a "T" dollars automatic spending cuts kick in which will decimate Medicare. And, as a sequel, the Rethugs will clutch their pearls in horror at the very idea that we have such a huge deficit and will immediately begin looking for ways to make up for it by further cutting Medicare, and Medicaid and Social Security. This tax "cut" is the Republican wet dream that many thought could never happen. But happen it did and we and our kids are going to pay an enormous price for this horrible piece of legislation!

(58,785 posts)Rump's just the name on it. If it passes, we're all immediately in debt to the tune of several trillions of dollars to the donor class and come January the first payment is automatically paid by cannibalizing programs meant to serve us.

Hence why I think Trump is acting even more insane than usual right now. He knows they have he votes and hes doing everything possible to keep the spotlight on himself and off the tax bill.

(12,132 posts)the only people it really hurts are the ones in high tax states.
Are not the higher tax states also the more blue ones?
So Repubs don't care if those people get hurt
BUT
Are there enough of them to make a big enough noise to defeat this thing?
assuming Flake is correct it worries me that middle class and poor people who don't lose anything will just let it slide.
edit to add: I don't assume Flake is correct. I actually assume he is wrong or lying BUT what if enough people do think he's right? Even if just temporarily...

(12,310 posts)It's like people are accepting it as something that might work but it's a fricking nightmare. Kind of reminds me the way people looked the other way with the Access Hollywood tape. I just don't get it. Like I said, I understand the deplorables, but I don't get the media and pundits who, instead of ridiculing the thing to hell like they should be doing, seem to be eating popcorn and watching the train wreck.

(12,132 posts)I am not convinced the rest of the populace know enough about the plan to worry about it as long as they don't think they are getting the shaft. And there seems to be a lot of folks out there willing to tell poor and middle class people that they'll be fine. I only hear bad things about it here and on NPR when someone other than a repub is being asked about it. Most of America doesn't read DU or listen to NPR.

(10,624 posts)Not a damn one of them.
It's possible that three of them could come down with a bad case of conscience and torpedo this thing. But it isn't all that likely. At least not on this first go-around.

(36,461 posts)in spite of their misgivings. Koch/Mercer will cut off piggy bank access if this doesn't pass. That's their main concern. But they also look like fools, since they control both chambers but still can't govern. Buy your ear plugs now, cuz the gloating & chortling will be unbearable.

(3,194 posts)Not if the choice is that or watching a new episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
There will be protests, to be sure, and the media will cover them briefly, before going on to other things. Meanwhile the tax bill will become law, and hurt Millions for years to come.

(12,310 posts)He's already talking about welfare reform. I just don't see how the majority of people will just say ok and accept this. The majority of people are not rich. I can't help but feel that people who know better are fucking complicit in all of this.
