(15,369 posts)It's not as if the OP is in Russian, Greek or Chinese ... and many of the words used in the headlines have almost direct corollaries in English. http://www.thehistoryofenglish.com/history_middle.html
Your post reminds me of when Bush II said that the French had no word for "entrepreneur."
If he goes by this standard...
A short list of words without equivalent in French :
- President
- Stupid
- Idiot
- Elections
- Administration (well "gouvernement" is the accurate translation but "administration" is acceptable too)

(37,748 posts)No doubt, expressing your sentiment this means nothing to you is also a waste of your time. But I'm certain you hold yourself to a much lower standard than those around you.

It is only that rad waste squatting the OO who isn't
He should be thinly sliced and sun dried for the damages he have done to his own country and his fellow citizens.
On another side, it's not the best idea...his toxicity is too dangerous...

L'étendard sanglant est levé, (bis)
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
Mugir ces féroces soldats ?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras
Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes !
Aux armes, citoyens,
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons !
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons !
......
But as Belgian, I'll go for "La Brabançonne" instead of "La marseillaise"
Here's the 1st couplet of the first version, it is different from the current one but it fits very well the events
Aux cris de mort et de pillages,
Des méchants s'étaient rassemblés,
Mais notre énergique courage
Loin de nous les a refoulés.
Maintenant purs de cette fange
Que flétrissait notre cité,
Amis, il faut greffer l'Orange
Sur l'arbre de la liberté.
Translation :
To cries of murder and pillage,
The wicked had rallied around,
But your forceful courage
Has pushed them far away.
Now, pure of this filth
That was soiling your city,
Friends, we must graft Orange
Onto the tree of Liberty.

(50,557 posts)The La Libre head doesn't really translate well, but it basically says "Democrats win in Alabama, major defeat for Donald Trump."
Le Soir:
Alabama elects Democratic senator, major political setback for Trump
L'Obs:
Heavy defeat for Donald Trump in the Senate
France Info:
United States: Democrats win in Alabama and inflict a major setback on Trump
Le Parisien:
Alabama: Democrat Doug Jones wins, major political setback for Trump
HuffPost:
Roy Moore loses the Senate race in Alabama. The Democrats do the impossible and inflict a huge slap on Trump
Boursorama:
Republican defeat in Alabama, setback for Trump

(5,101 posts)I only gave a general translation because all headlines are saying more or less the same and also because I wanted to share as soon as possible our feelings and joy.

(50,557 posts)The general consensus in the French world is that Moore is basically irrelevant in this election; that no matter who won, the election was really a referendum on Trump. In that, they are correct; also, the election proves most of the country is in play in 2018. Alabama is so Republican, until last night you could pick a random name out of the phone book, put that person on the Republican line on the ballot, and almost be guaranteed a win. That no longer works. I dont think it will work anywhere now.

(5,101 posts)This election was under high scrutiny here.
It was seen as a test.
In fact, the results are very instructive. To me, it is almost an earthquake.
Alabama is probably the deepest red State in the US. Many argued that Alabama flipped red in the 60's. Yes, because of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.
Secessionists were democrats and very conservatives. Democrats in name only. Republicans were more "liberals" at this time.
The state did not flip red, it was red from day one. Far beyond red if I remember well. Alabama was a part of the "Solid South", the states controlled by the Dixiecrat. These called democrats were whatever you want but democrats ! Segregationists, supremacists, Far-Right...
After the party dissolved, they joined Republicans. To me, Alabama never flipped to another color until yesterday. It is a misuse of language.
Yesterday is an important date in history. Now we can say Alabama flipped. It is magistral slap for republicans and Trump's politics.
It is up to Dems now, to avoid divisiveness, join their forces and create a blue wave.
After the Trump disaster, it might take decades to Republicans to recover.
I hope I put something understandable, it would have said it otherwise in French. My English vocabulary is too limited. I can't argue at a better level.
