Sixty-three black soldiers were represented by one lawyer in the largest court martial in U.S. history, the first of three that followed the Houston riot of 1917. In total, 110 men out of 118 were found guilty, and nineteen were sentenced to death by hanging.

(4,940 posts)my daughter was tasked by teachers to write an essay. In Alabama, that was Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, etc. We had our first computer at the time, and she wanted to be "different".
She found an article about this. We went to the library (yeah, books!) and looked it up. Her essay turned out to be 23 pages single-spaced. I no longer have a copy, but if I did, I scan and paste it here.
She has said, many times since then, "I didn't really understand" until she did her research. Thank you for reminding me of a wonderful memory!

(12,608 posts)I even shared it with my children. It just boggles my mind that there is so much stuff in history we don't know that is kept in secret, or forgotten.

The neighborhood around the park is called Camp Logan.
I heard about this from older neighbors when I was kid.
