How come Dems never use scare tactics to get people to vote?

I was just thinking about this the other day of how Republicans have always been successful at getting their base to show up to vote through scare tactics. We know the typical scare tactics they use such as racism, death panels. I was thinking about how Dems could have done their own scare tactics during the '16 election. For example they could have had commercials of people losing their health insurance due to the republicans taking it away and then dying or going bankrupt. They could have also had commercials that dealt with Net Neutrality and said that the Republicans plan to take away your Internet. Another idea I had is a commercial that shows a bunch of rich people laughing about all the money they are going to steal from the middle classes by having tax increases on the middle class and the poor.

1. They did some sort of psych study on this and apparently the conservative mind

keys in and responds to negativity and fear.

2. That's pretty interesting

and makes sense. It never ceases to amaze me how easily they can be scared stupid into voting for the Republicans. It's depressing and funny at the same time.

3. Yes there is more than one study that says that

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/mind-in-the-machine/201612/fear-and-anxiety-drive-conservatives-political-attitudes

There are also studies that show that scaring people makes them feel more conservative. On the other hand, feeling more empathetic and rational makes you more liberal.

So it's asymmetric warfare. Conservatives have to scare people and liberals have to calm them down and make them think.

6. Yeah, but guess what. I'm a progressive and have good things to fear.

Loss of social security income -- which I've paid into all my life.
Loss of Medicare -- which I've paid into all my life.
Loss of affordable clean water to drink.
Loss of clean air to breath.

The GOP is giving everyone from the 95%-ile on down plenty of things to be afraid of. I think it's time to start hammering these simple points home to the conservative mindset.

8. Well, yes, they don't call Social Security the third rail of politics for nothing

From a conservative brain point of view, preserving social security because it has "always" existed, therefore taking it away will scare them. Which is why Bush couldn't do it in 2004. And why conservatives hated Obamacare in 2008, then started to like it in 2016 when they contemplated life without it.

4. Yep, I was thinking about that study too.

Which does suggest that differences in brain structure have a lot to do with how we perceive threats.
Perhaps this would be useful to the OP-
Individuals who call themselves liberal tend to have larger anterior cingulate cortexes, while those who call themselves conservative have larger amygdalas. Based on what is known about the functions of those two brain regions, the structural differences are consistent with reports showing a greater ability of liberals to cope with conflicting information and a greater ability of conservatives to recognize a threat, the researchers say.

"Previously, some psychological traits were known to be predictive of an individual's political orientation," said Ryota Kanai of the University College London. "Our study now links such personality traits with specific brain structure."

Kanai said his study was prompted by reports from others showing greater anterior cingulate cortex response to conflicting information among liberals. "That was the first neuroscientific evidence for biological differences between liberals and conservatives," he explained.

There had also been many prior psychological reports showing that conservatives are more sensitive to threat or anxiety in the face of uncertainty, while liberals tend to be more open to new experiences.

5. "Vote or Die"

Seen in Alabama and I thought it was extremely effective.

We should be using this slogan elsewhere.

7. They did last time

I received fundraising emails with subject lines like "Trump wins!!" I was so disgusted I unsubscribed and refuse to donate to the DNC. I support individual candidates only. I have had conversations about it with friends who did the same thing.

9. I didn't like those emails either

I even emailed back and said I wouldn't donate anymore unless they sent me some positive emails. I didn't get an answer.
