Alabama Republicans want to ban crossover voting in runoffs

Alabama Republicans are supporting a bill that would prohibit voters who participate in one party's primary from voting in another party's subsequent runoff.

Democrats are saying it's not needed.

The Alabama Senate passed the bill to ban "cross-over" voting this week.

"It helps the Democrats choose Democratic candidates, it helps the Republicans choose Republican candidates. It just prevents the cross-over voting so you get a pure general election with a Democrat and a Republican," said Sen. Tom Whatley, R-Auburn, the sponsor.

Whatley's bill passed by a vote of 25-9, with just one Republican voting against it, Sen. Paul Sanford of Huntsville. All eight Senate Democrats voted against the bill.

That sucks. In the past I have voted Republicans also because there were some who I liked better than the Democrat of choice. I do not vote for them at all now but now they are taking that away. They have not done that in Washington state..yet.

I view primaries as still a party function. Primary voters (party members) should vote in run offs. It would prevent "Operation Chaos" movements.
