Drag show in Alabama shut down by police during Pride weekend; LGBTQ community questions real motive
Alabama authorities shut down a drag show Saturday night during Montgomery Pride United, a raid that drew immediate comparisons to the Stonewall Riots, people from the city’s LGBTQ community said.
The event, which was held at a restaurant downtown called A Touch of Soul Café, was being advertised as the after-party for the Montgomery Pride march, which had taken place earlier in the day.
The show was also a fundraiser for the opening of a new bar to serve the community. The city’s only full-time LGBTQ bar, Club 322 had closed earlier this year, according to local newspaper Montgomery Advertiser.
"We’ve been running for weeks trying to raise money for a gay club in Montgomery, because we don’t have one,” Victoria A. Jewelle, a drag performer and the show’s director, told NBC News. “We were trying to raise money for a new establishment so we can have a place to feel safe.”
