Petraeus Close to Plea Deal Over Giving Classified Data to Lover

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — David H. Petraeus, the best-known military commander of his generation, is close to reaching a plea deal with the Justice Department that will allow him to avoid an embarrassing trial over whether he provided classified information to a mistress when he was the director of the C.I.A., according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The plea deal would complete a spectacular fall for Mr. Petraeus, a retired four-star general who was once discussed as a possible candidate for vice president or even president. He led the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and was the architect of a counterinsurgency strategy that at one time seemed a model for future warfare.

His mistress, Paula Broadwell, is a former Army Reserve officer who had an affair with Mr. Petraeus in 2011, when she was interviewing him for a biography, “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus.”

<..>

Mr. Petraeus resigned as the director of the C.I.A. in 2012, three days after President Obama was re-elected. At the time, Mr. Petraeus acknowledged the affair. He has since denied any criminal wrongdoing.

But if you're low-ranking like Chelsea Manning, you'll be detained and imprisoned without a trial.

Probably nothing to do with spying on the American people.

BTW: she had a security clearance, so this doesn't really have much to do with unauthorized transmission of classified information. Interesting constellation of events.

8. Her security clearance doesn't give her a "need to know" status, so that doesn't work.

She most likely was not authorized to receive the info, despite her clearance.

10. Do you really know that? She did serve as his official biographer.

The need-to-know standard is pretty vague:

Id. §3.4. “Need-to-know” is based on a determination within the executive branch in accordance with relevant
directives that a prospective recipient “requires access to specific classified information in order to perform or assist in
a lawful and authorized governmental function.”

11. What government function did she serve? There was no requirement that Petraeus

needed a book written about him. She was a writer who just happened to be a reserve officer, who just happened to have some level of clearance related to her job as an officer. That doesn't necessarily mean she's "read in" to any programs or missions that Petraeus dealt with--especially not once he was out of the military and in the CIA.

and required to pay $82,000 for unauthorized travel expenses. I would expect something more severe for Petraeus,, unless color matters.

Petraeus isn't on active duty, he retired in 2011.
He was CIA Director when this scandal went down...

Ward was an active duty 4 star when he was demoted.

He was a damn fine commander.

Not sure what happened with the trouble he got into.

Amazing that this treasonist and elevated member of our armed services has little press around his crimes and will serve no time. Justice continues to be biased.

If anyone needs to be examined for insanity it is the media and our Congressional-Senate, or Attorney General that considers this breach of security action only amounts to a misdemeanor.

This is a WTF moment, where Petraeus within the Bush corruption era in profiteering spirals right into equity firms.

Exampled by Petraeus after a simple fine and probation Petraeus is likely going to make millions in a lucrative post-government career as a partner in a private equity firm and a worldwide speaker on national security issues.

Isn't it interesting many Americans that retire can only make a certain limit of money after leaving the work force.

Yet these political characters get to move forward make millions in fee’s even after being convicted of a misdemeanor. If I was convicted of a misdemeanor I would likely have a hard time getting a job or a loan or find a place to live.

To casually saying there is a plea bargain when Petraeus is the elephant in the room spinning a story of peanuts and flaunting a rigged system, not only all questions the depth but fails the limits of integrity for this age.

No wonder the Bush war is a failure for American honor, but a success of those private equity firms through sweet secret profiteering.

This is a raging obnoxious violation that Boomers of this age have entrusted to their peers to do their job and duty with honor.

Obviously for that inner product that is connected to Petraeus having a whore is the norm.

So America is now modeled as not only a prize for Bush profiteering it is sweetened as world class war whore.

In the article in AARP magazine “The Last of The Boomers” perfectly avoids the Hollywood whore approach that intellectually corrupts America.

Its disappointing the AARP article did not condemn the Bush profiteering war at all.

Likely AARP is complicit being tightly connected to the United Health Care Company and Medicare all profiteering through a Hollywood red carpet of Congressional legislation that screws the average American.

As a Boomer reflecting on this and realizing how screwed up that half century was because of the media behavior management in political practices exampled by mainstream media political commercial lies is the core complicity which included public training through structured breaking news, is the problem.
