Exclusive: Post-it note maker 3M unveils new sourcing policy

NEW YORK Thu Mar 5, 2015 7:02am EST

(Reuters) - St. Paul-based 3M Co, one of the world’s largest manufacturers and the maker of Post-it notes, will take new steps to ensure that its suppliers of paper, pulp and packaging provide materials that come from sustainably logged timber.

The new paper-sourcing policy, aimed at preventing the destruction of forests, comes after pressure on 3M from environmental activists, who accused the company of outdated practices that jeopardized fragile forests.

The company, which also manufacturers Scotch brand tape products, will now require some 5,000 direct suppliers, located in more than 70 countries, to provide data, including the source of their harvested wood fiber. The company says it may sever ties with suppliers that fail to meet its standards.

While other companies have also set conservation standards for their suppliers, 3M's action is expected to have broad ripple effects, because of the size of its supply network, said Todd Paglia, executive director at ForestEthics, a forest and climate advocacy organization.

ForestEthics, which led a campaign against 3M, is now applauding the company's new standards. "No other manufacturer has adopted such a rigorous policy with such reach around the world," Paglia said.

As was noted in the story, this move "is expected to have broad ripple effect.." A move that will help "fragile forest" around the world..3M uses a lot of paper and goods derived from paper and trees. It may not seem like important news, but I believe it is..

That's what 3M makes.

I did a series of communication seminars for them in the 90s, so that's how I know. Actually, at that time they made something like 66,000 products, so they've tailored their list since that time.

On the last day of my seminar, they threw me a party with cake and coffee and gave me presents. I also was given three large bags and was told I could go shopping at the "company store." The company store is a very large room stocked with products that would be of interest to their employees, and they are all allowed to shop there. Anyway, they allowed me to stuff those three bags full of products and I'm still operating off post-it notes from that time.

I know hemp is one option. Bamboo grows so fast I wonder if it could be used for paper products.
