(81,893 posts)ISIS is Saudi and Turkish backed.
Saudi Arabia is our enemy in Syria but our friend in Yemen. Iran is our friend in Iraq, our frenemy in Syria and our enemy in Yemen. Good luck keeping up!

(13,184 posts)It has been the biggest conduit for foreign fighters and materiel.
It is absolutely obsessed with overthrowing Assad.
Notice that ISIS, right on Turkey's borders, doesn't fuck with Turkey.
Don't forget the 48 Turkish diplomats who didn't get their heads cut off, but instead got a free ride home from Mosul.
Turkey has been a baleful influence in this whole mess.

(10,115 posts)This is why Obama wasn't quick to arm Syrian rebels. There were so many factions, who were the people to support and then swamp the country with weapons. McCain as POTUS would be a military disaster. He would have committed troops and weapons and we would we be now and forever just fighting all the Mid East.

(59,508 posts)Yemen is a Sunni majority country, whose Sunni President was deposed by the rebels, but is fighting back.
To further complicate things, the US had the TACIT approval of that leader to go after the (Sunni) AQ people.
However, some of those countries are part of the group fighting ISIS -- but I do notice that here they are actually sending in troops - something they have not done against ISIS. (My guess - is that they are angry that the US did not include removing Assad in the ISIS goal.)

(3,746 posts)SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) Egyptian security and military officials say Saudi Arabia and Egypt will lead a ground operation in Yemen against Shiite rebels and their allies after a campaign of airstrikes to weaken them.
Three senior officials tell The Associated Press that forces would enter by land from Saudi Arabia and by sea from the Red Sea and Arabian Sea. They said Thursday that other nations will also be involved.
They would not specify troop numbers or say when the operation would start, only that it would be after airstrikes weaken the rebels and allied forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
They say the offensive aims to push the rebels into negotiations on power sharing. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.
