Iran accuses Turkish leader Erdogan of fomenting regional strife

Source: Reuters

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's foreign minister accused Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Friday of fomenting strife in the Middle East, rebuffing his accusation that Iran was trying to dominate the region.

"It would be better if those who have created irreparable damages with their strategic mistakes and lofty politics would adopt responsible policies," Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.

"Under the current circumstances, all countries must work toward establishing stability and preventing the spread of insecurity in the region," Zarif, who is attending negotiations on Iran's disputed nuclear program in Switzerland, added.

Erdogan declared his support on Thursday for a Saudi-led military operation in Yemen targeting the Houthis, and suggested the group's links to Tehran were evidence of Iranian ambitions.

Erdogan: ‘Iran is trying to dominate the region’

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan accused Iran on Thursday of trying to dominate the Middle East and said its efforts have begun annoying Ankara, as well as Saudi Arabia and Gulf Arab countries.

Turkey earlier said it supports the Saudi-led military operation against Houthi rebels in Yemen and called on the militia group and its “foreign supporters” to abandon acts which threaten peace and security in the region.

“Iran is trying to dominate the region,” said Erdogan, who is due to visit Tehran in early April. “Could this be allowed? This has begun annoying us, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries. This is really not tolerable and Iran has to see this,” he added in a press conference.

Warplanes from Saudi Arabia and Arab allies struck at Houthi forces in Yemen, who have taken over much of the country in their campaign to oust President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

He wants to bring the empire back. Northern Iraq for starters.

There will be a full-blown regional ME war very soon.

ISIS is right up on the Turkish border, but it never attacks Turkey.

Turkey was an obstacle in the effort to defend Kobani. Its tanks just sat there at the border while ISIS attacked the town.

It won't let the anti-ISIS alliance use the handy Incirlik airbase.

It's been the major conduit for foreign fighters going to join ISIS.

Erdogan is monomaniacal about overthrowing Assad next time. He even tries to suck us in to shit like "no fly zones" in Syria in exchange for "cooperation" against ISIS.

And what the fuck is Turkey doing involved in military operations in Yemen?

A lot more attention needs to be paid to Turkey's baleful role in all this.
