Indiana Pizzeria: No Pies for Gay Weddings

A Walkertown, Indiana, pizza shop is the states first business to declare it will discriminate against gays after the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was signed into law last week. If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no, Memories Pizza owner Crystal OConnor told a local news station. We are a Christian establishment. However, gay coupleslike those of other faithsare welcome to patronize the establishment on non-matrimonial occasions. I dont think its discrimination, OConnor says. Its supposed to help people that have a religious belief. Gov. Mike Pence said yesterday that he didnt believe the law allowed discrimination but asked for new legislation to fix the RFRA by the end of the week.

Indiana Pizzeria Vows To Never Deliver A Pizza To A Gay Wedding
-snip-
O'Connor told WBND that she doesn't believe the law allows for discrimination or specifically targets gays.
But her father suggested that the family shouldn't be punished for refusing to cater same-sex weddings if they were asked to do so.
"That's a lifestyle that you choose," Kevin O'Connor told WBND. "I choose to be heterosexual. They choose to be homosexual. Why should I be beat over the head because they choose that lifestyle?"
The family later clarified for the news station that they would not deny service to a same-sex or non-Christian couple who came to eat at the restaurant.

(115,677 posts)and then had a big potluck reception. People do all sorts of things and to say they should not get married because they don't hold a Traditional Wedding is incredible. Especially in a thread talking about prejudices and bigotry.
Sanity Claws
(21,849 posts)If I had a wedding in which a potluck reception was being held, I would not appreciate it if a guest showed up with a pizza. It would indicate that he put very little effort or thought into it. Of course, there may be an exception to that, such as someone in the wedding party absolutely loved pizzas and would eat it for every meal if he could. IMHO, pizzas are fine for frat parties but not a wedding.
I still can't believe how you can twist a remark about pizzas being a faux pas for a wedding and imply that the remark is prejudiced and bigoted.
uppityperson
(115,677 posts)"I would never have pizza at my wedding" talks about you. "Anyone who" prejudges others.
There are all sorts of ways of holding weddings and to say "anyone who would plan a wedding with pizza should not" is the part I have a problem with as yes, it does prejudge people.

(20,277 posts)I actually prefer going to more casual weddings. I would rather have pizza, bbq or a potluck than rubbery chicken, limp salad or dried up fish.
We went to a bbq wedding last summer. Shorts, tshirts, burgers, Italian sausage, chicken and all the usual sides. Ice cold beer or wine. We had so much fun.

(135,425 posts)The party was held in the bride's parents' villa, attended by nearly two hundred people, and they had a huge outdoor eating area, replete with "summer kitchen" and a pizza oven which was manned by one of the guys who owned the pizza shop down the street and around the corner. We danced our feet off and gorged on all kinds of food far into the night, include pizza.
Just because these shop owners are bigots is no reason to "dis" a food that a lot of people just love. Pizza is good. Bigots are not. And people should celebrate a personal event like marriage howsoever they want.
roody

(3,051 posts)But really, the solution is to ignore this.
"Huh?" you say.
Well, we all know that pizza is not a big wedding meal. Possible, but remote. A gay couple in Indiana ordering Pizza for a wedding is yet even more remote, statistically speaking (although I suppose it might become a "thing" now).
So, for this non-issue and non-event, said Pizza company got national exposure, tons of local exposure, and can cater to the Holier-than-Thou crowd, akin to how Chick-Fil-A become more popular by a certain segment of the population when attacked.
In sum: this was a publicity stunt, and a rather effective one. Don Draper would be proud.
Solution: don't give them what they want. Ignore them.
+++++++++++
On a completely different topic, why is government even involved in marriage? It's a religious and/or private rite and/or contract. None of the government's business. We don't live in Scotland anymore with the English king having a chance to take the bride for a test ride. Time to move out of the middle ages on this.

Thankfully, the state of Indiana has us covered. There was none of that this time! See, not homophobic Christians like myself and the owners of this fine establishment can turn people away based on "sincerely held religious beliefs."

I'm as sure as I'm sitting here that she is one of the 'true' believers who cannot function in society without somebody telling her what is right and wrong. I'd bet money that her church has repeatedly told her that homosexuality is a 'choice'. And that it's the worst sin in the Bible.

TlalocW
(15,384 posts)I sometimes think that the way to go in these cases is yes, to allow laws like this, but instead of just good businesses putting up, "We Serve Everyone," signs or stickers, if you want to be able to discriminate, you have to apply for a sticker that you put in your window that says you reserve the right to discriminate. If no sticker in your window, you're legally obligated to serve everyone until you do get that sticker. Once everyone knows who is on which side of the issue, the "good Christian" businesses can see if they'll be able to survive doing business amongst themselves and the shrinking minority of people who think like they do. Yes, they'll lose business, and many places will shut down, but they're not just talking the talk but walking the walk when it comes to showing they're on God's side so they can take solace in that.
This guy essentially just went and did this, and he essentially picked this fight for no good reason. Now if he had been a baker or a florist or some business more closely associated with weddings, it might have made more sense, but as so many have pointed out, you don't normally serve pizza at a wedding reception. I work on the peripherals of this industry, and I'm comfortable in saying, I bet he's done at most two or three receptions since the business opened. But now that he's come down on the, "No gay weddings," we'll see how that affects his day-to-day business.
