Right-to-work goes down in flames in Illinois House with zero yes votes
Source: chicago sun times
Gov. Bruce Rauners desires to have right-to-work in Illinois went down in flames in the House on Thursday, gaining zero yes votes in a fiery debate Democrats aimed squarely at the governor.
The vote tally was 0 yes votes, 72 no votes and 37 voting present, offering a blistering rebuke to Rauners anti-union agenda. A handful of Republicans went for a walk during the vote, not publicly falling on one side or another.
Republicans dismissed the vote as political theater even as Democrats pit workers rights against corporate greed and called Rauner divisive for touring the state and essentially asking local towns to kick unions out.

(23,156 posts)Many years ago I started my working life in Arizona. At the time it was one of only two Right to Work states. I do not recall the other one. But what we all knew was that as a consequence, our wages in Arizona were lower than in other states. I then worked for Ma Bell, the telephone company. We were unionizes, CWA, Communication Workers of America. In 1967 there was a strike. It was the line workers, as I recall, who were actually striking, and I have never forgotten who crossed the picket lines and who didn't.

(15,739 posts)Edit to add, I worked for Western Electric and walked 2 times for Bell System. The SWBT never honored our picket lines. But when the contract was signed, we got .5% increase the operators got (I think) 10% and the rest of the SWBT got around 5%. The operators and others at the office would just walk right through the picket line every time.

(22,165 posts)Somehow ( ) the state has voted for the Democratic Presidential candidate since 1992, has two Democratic senators .... yet the state legislature is over-run by knuckle dragging right wing lunatics
The report credits gerrymandered maps in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin with allowing Republicans to overcome a 1.1 million popular-vote deficit. In Ohio, for instance, Republicans won 12 out of 16 House races despite voters casting only 52 percent of their vote for Republican congressional candidates. The situation was even more egregious to the north. Michiganders cast over 240,000 more votes for Democratic congressional candidates than Republicans, but still elected a 9-5 Republican delegation to Congress.

(234 posts)The ONLY reason we got stuck with this sociopath is that Quinn is probably the worst Democratic politician and campaigner since Jimmy Carter or maybe John Kerry. Actually, I think George McGovern is probably the only one worse than Quinn in history. To all my Illinois Democratic friends who started gnashing their teeth last November, the House results told a very different story, namely that Rauner had no chance of doing anything he can't do unilaterally. And that isn't much, as Quinn's time in office showed. So Rauner is a lot of lip and not much else. And he has to live with that wife of his, yikes. She's about as sincere as a bad toupee.
mopinko
(70,387 posts)a joke on the people of illinois.
but i have heard nothing about the republican dirty trick that kept a lot of chgo voters, quinn's base, from voting on election day.
but really, blaggo took his populist creds, never thinking he would end up at the top of the ticket. i had zero desire to knock on doors and be quinn's face. i am not alone.
Quinn comes off like a well-intentioned bumbler. I don't think he is, but on the other hand I'm more confident that he was in.over his head than i am he was a good leader, and he couldnt seem to take advantage of a majority in the statehouse. His campaign, like Schneider's, focused more on why not to elect the opponent and nothing about accomplishments. Even with that, Ruiner had the charm of a lead ingot, though he at least looked angry as do sociopaths, angry at how much inferior and incompetent everyone else is. I thought people would see through it, but apparently he benefited from the contrast. Quinn always seemed to have this dumb smile on his face like he didn't understand the gravity of what he was facing. Another Democratic defeat snatched from the jaws of victory!

i think he is a truly good and committed man. but he missed a lot of the lessons of kindergarten about how to play w others.
the illinois aca site really disappointed me. it was bungled from day one, in part by quinn's refusal to take the good advice that he paid for. it should have been the best of all the state sites w the human tech capital that we have in illinois. but no...

(750 posts)If those elected officials did their jobs America would not need Unions.
The first amendment describes the basic elements of a Union.
The right to freedom of speech, the right to assemble peacefully, the right to address and submit grievances to the government, the right to free press as in this blog, and of course the right to religious belief.
Right now my own personal experience is waiting for a determination in a grievance complaint to the Labor Department and OSHA reference to a deliberate action by the Union Pacific Railroad Company to avoid reporting my medical injury accurately, plus the local Safety Service Management Team deliberately avoided taking responsibility to aid in my recovery.
Yes, my documentation proves Chicago Service Safety Management personal deliberately lied about actions in my injury causing a poor recovery.
With that said, signal this as a clear warning to those unfortunate in the latest derail in Pennsylvania, beware the railroad will sacrifice managers to lie rather than pay out in the injury responsibility. Anyone, including the engineer in that horrible derail having safety issues is welcome to my help and documentation.
My injury complaint shows how the Union Pacific Chicago Service safety management team deliberately clouded my injury to avoid reporting an accurate data base that will likely be used by national insurance companies like the United Health Care Company largely connected to the Medicare system, this data base will make an unreliable, or fraudulent Health Care system.

(70,387 posts)no small part of rauner's victory was a republican dirty trick that fouled up the voting in chicago.
dimwit election judges believed phone calls saying they were not needed. dont think the number that gave up would have saved quinn's hide, but it didnt help.
quinn was a crappy candidate. he is just a doofus. he scraped by the first time because people were tired of the chaos. but he didnt do enough to distinguish himself. the smell of rod blagojevich finally caught up to him.
i could see it happening in a red state. i think that is sorta how claire macaskill got elected.
