'Star Trek' Actress Nichelle Nichols Recovering From Minor Stroke

Source: CBS Los Angeles

Nichelle Nichols, best known for playing Lt. Uhura on “Star Trek,” was being treated at a Los Angeles-area hospital Thursday after suffering a minor stroke.

The news was released on Nicholes’ Facebook page, with a post from Zach McGinnis of the talent-booking company Galactic Productions.

“Last night while at her home in L.A., Nichelle Nichols suffered from a mild stroke,” McGinnis wrote. “She is currently undergoing testing to determine how severe the stroke was. Please keep her in your thoughts.”

Nicholes, 82, portrayed Uhura on the original “Star Trek” series and in six “Star Trek” movies. She also provided Uhura’s voice in the animated series based on the show.

She was one of the first black women to have a major feature role on a television series. Martin Luther King Jr. once called her a role model for black children and women.

my wife had 3 strokes at the end of December, early January. Luckily, their was no perceived impairment. Doesn't mean I wasn't scared shitless, though.

on edit: I had a major crush on her growing up.

in a major television series not portraying a servant; her prominent supporting role as a bridge officer was unprecedented. During the first year of the series, Nichols was tempted to leave the show, as she wanted to pursue a Broadway career; however, a conversation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., changed her mind. She has said that King personally encouraged her to stay on the show, telling her that he was a big fan of the series. He said she "could not give up" because she was playing a vital role model for black children and young women across the country, as well as for other children who would see blacks appearing as equals.[1][2][9][10] It is also often reported that Dr. King added that "Once that door is opened by someone, no one else can close it again."[citation needed]

Some people never forget what got them there and take on the responsibility with the rewards. She is one of those.

I find it interesting when people who aren't the main "characters" in a show have a much greater positive impact in real life than their counterparts. That's a good lesson in realizing who people are really listening to, regardless of how hard one blows.

Get well soon, Ms. Nichols.

I grew up in a multicultural environment (The US Army), so I never understood her impact on popular culture until I was a teenager. And by then, I was too ga-ga over her beauty and her gorgeous legs to think of anything else.
