British spies 'moved after Snowden files read'

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by TexasTowelie (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: BBC

The Sunday Times is reporting that Russia and China have cracked the encryption of the computer files.
The government source told the BBC the countries "have information" that led to agents being moved but added there was "no evidence" any had been harmed.

The government source said the information obtained by Russia and China meant that "knowledge of how we operate" had stopped the UK getting "vital information".

Intelligence officials have long warned of what they see as the dangers of the information leaked by Mr Snowden and its potential impact on keeping people in the UK safe - a concern Prime Minister David Cameron has said he shares.

According to the Sunday Times, Western intelligence agencies have been forced to pull agents out of "hostile countries" after "Moscow gained access to more than one million classified files" held by Mr Snowden.

given including the Guardian and maybe the New York Times or the Washington Post?

Snowden also sent the files via e-mail to certain individuals. He said he did not take them to Russia. He was in (was it Hong Kong?) China only a short time.

Or were these files that the Chinese took directly from the US? They were, after all, apparently able to get files from the US government from the records on those who got security clearances from our government.

These allegations are very vague. They do not allege precisely at what point or from what source the files were obtained. They implicate Snowden but provide no persuasive argument as to why he is implicated other than that he took the files in the first place. Could have been carelessness within the intelligence services themselves. After all, Snowden obtained the files because our NSA was careless in giving access and not monitoring what happened to files after access was given.

Also, from what I have seen of the files that Snowden made available, there was not discussion about where intelligence officers might have been.

Encryption codes are only so secure. The US government uses them. The Germans also used an encryption code in WWII. Enigma broke that code.

The article blames Snowden but does not clearly say why. I'm sure that if the Germans had realized that we had somehow obtained their classified communications, they would have blamed traitors within their organization. They would have been wrong.

More details are needed on this story.

2. If he left the files in the NSA instead of country jumping this would not be up for discussion.

just like the first smear attempts on Snowden. Allegations, dubious assertions and twisted re -framing, trying to be passed as fact. Snowden had nothing to do with this - reading the article carefully, it is one of the companies / media who may have had the data stolen from them. But, again, it's too vague and generalized. And it sure isn't Snowden's fault.
