Trump files $500 million lawsuit as pageant woes mount

Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) As fallout built over Donald Trump's remarks about immigrants from Mexico, the Republican presidential candidate answered back with legal action to match his trademark brashness, filing a $500 million lawsuit.

The suit against Univision for dropping the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants claims breach of contract, defamation and First Amendment violations, and contends Univision turned on him because it supports Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

In a statement, Univision called Trump's lawsuit "factually false and legally ridiculous." It said it will "continue to fight against Mr. Trump's ongoing efforts to run away from the derogatory comments he made."

Univision, which moved last week to opt out of Trump's pageants because of the celebrity businessman's remarks earlier this month, is now far from alone.

5. Sigh. He does this for money, fame, ego. If he became President, quite by accident, he would

likely go blind from stepping in front of all the cameras.

Waste of humanity.

15. What sickens me is that many Republians support hilm. He is running second to Bush in some polls.

I can only hope that complete destruction of the Republican Party is at hand. Progressives are at long last fighting back against these repulsive scumbags. It is difficult to feel sorry for some racist, corporate boot lickers when they get a pink slip. Its a shame that they have to take down Democratic fellow workers with their folly.

on the basis that T-Rump has hurt their image and their ability to earn money. That they had to drop the pageant because of his actions.

All their mouths do stuff like that. That's what makes 'em republi-CONS! That's how you can tell who they are. All of 'em have radioactive toxic waste coming out of their mouths. Every time they speak.

34. They aren't and that's the thing...

The First is about what the government may do but you'd be surprised how many people think it governs interactions between private citizens. Trump is suing on a First Amendment claim, which is why I think Univision should countersue on the same grounds. Both should then be thrown out of court.

36. Trump actually isn't suing on First Amendment grounds

The Complaint mentions the first amendment but doesn't attempt to state a legal claim based on any infringement of his first amendment rights -- its a garden variety business dispute -- breach of contract, interference with business relationships and defamation claim.

What "First Amendment violations" is he talking about?

Those media corporations are the very types of "private" entities that he loves.

Trump repeats the same failed behavior over and over and over. He poisons everything he touches.

but even his lawyers don't try to turn that silly allegation into a formal legal claim for relief.

12. Corporation have person-hood

Their right to free speech allows them to fire The Donald for running for President.

The lawsuit is without merit. That or they counter sue for damages as he made hate speech about their customers.

Nice going Clown. He can't open his mouth without saying something hateful about some large group or powerful Allie.

14. Actual value of the contract: $13.5 million

According to the complaint, Univision planned to pay out in full the $13.5 million value of its five-year contract with Miss Universe Organization. The deal called for Univision to pay a license fee of $2.5 million a year for the first three years, and $3 million a year for the final two years of the contract.

23. as it turns out the actual complaint doesn't make a claim for relief based on the first amendment

It's a garden variety breach of contract, breach of covenant of good faith and fair dealing, intentional interference with business relationships and defamation lawsuit.

I read the petition last night and was not impressed. There is also a defamation claim in this lawsuit that is really weak.

31. Right. The First Amendment is mentioned, but is not the basis of any legal cause of action

Without actually seeing the contract, it's hard to know how strong/weak the breach claim is. Since Univision apparently agreed to pay the full $13.5 million owed, I suspect the breach claim is strong and its really about the claim -- pretty weak imo -- for other damages.

Freedom of Speech, in the First Amendment means the government can't suppress speech. Last I checked Univision was a private enterprise and not a branch of a government.

Trump is that dumb. What a jackass.
