Kansas lawmakers pass ‘Sharia’ law bill
Source: Kansas City Star
TOPEKA -- A bill that would ban the use of foreign legal codes in Kansas courts broadly written but particularly aimed at Islamic Sharia law is on its way to the governor.
The 33-3 Senate vote came after a long and at times emotional debate Friday.
Opponents, including two senators who signed the committee report to bring the bill to the Senate floor, called it intolerant and unnecessary.
Proponents fired back that the bill would protect the U.S. and Kansas constitutions and prevent the use of foreign law to take away fundamental rights enjoyed in American courts.
Sen. Tim Owens, an Overland Park Republican who is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, apologized for putting the Senate in the position of having to vote on the bill, which passed the House 120-0 earlier in the week.

This really pisses me off. I don't live in Kansas, but I started working in Kansas so I am paying Kansas state taxes. Is Missouri any better? I think so - at least Emanuel Cleaver is my rep (the satan sandwich guy), and at least my Governor is a Dem (last name Nixon though). Shit I dunnno.

(44,173 posts)So if, as the article says, it is a broadly written law, I am assuming that would also include Catholic law or Jewish law?
Neither codes have roots in America.

(7,217 posts)The conservatives in the Catholic Church, who have had issues with the "American experiment" going back at least to Pope Pius IX, will soon bring back meat-less Fridays in yet another attempt to destroy our Constitution from within and institute Canon law and obedience to that Papist in Rome!!!
And blue-laws. No beer on Sundays while watching football. (Football? On a Sunday? 'Fergetit.)
Not to mention what it could do to Kansas cattle ranchers. Then again, elections have consequences.

(10,857 posts)I believe only Louisiana and New York have civil codes which are based on something other than English common law (owing to their colonization by the French and the Dutch.
Any chance this law will accidentally unravel 150 years of precedent? That could be fun.
What about Indian law? So much Indian land was stolen from Kansas tribes that the reservations there resemble patchwork quilts today. The borders of the historical reservations are much larger than the actual reservations today, and there is still question as to whether or not tribal law applies to tribal members living on historical reservation land, as well as non-Indians doing the same (white people are always eventually excluded from jurisdiction, but it could take decades and thousands of hours of lawyers' fees to settle that question...again... in favor of non-Indians... as usual; worse for Kansans, the criminal motivation which lurks behind all those precedents against Indians might have to be examined in the new light of strict, conservative interpretations of the law... which might actually favor the tribes for once... until they find a way to further erode tribal sovereignty).
American tribal law is not foreign and cannot legally be altered or adversely affected by state governments... but a stupid bill based on an imaginary fear might accidentally expand tribal law.... And that could be fun, too.

(34,108 posts)They are not done with redistricting or the budget. Today was supposed to be the last day for them but they have spent all their time on the Brownback social agenda. The funny thing is one of the women who stood up and supported this using women and their rights as her reason for supporting it is also one of the women who voted for all the horrid anti women legislation and another who supported this because "they could stone homosexuals" (a loose quote) is supporting all the anti LGBT legislation. They really know how to work their voters and cloud their real intentions unless someone is really paying close attention, sadly few do and this is one reason we still have these people making our laws.
I know I have been really nervous about all this Sharia Law that has been used here.
Drink up, it is about to get worse. They have next week to really put the screws to us and they will, oh yes they will.

(34,108 posts)Every single thing has come directly from his office. They sign pledges here, all of them. Sam wants us to set the example for the nation and watch out, he is going to run for President again, I would bet my life on it. They are going to do whatever it takes to get his agenda done. They have been warned by numerous budget offices what will happen if they do what he wants. We are going to be so broke there will not be a school left open or a government office with people to man them. BUT they ARE going to do it. Who is there to stop them? The Democrats, what a joke.
They essentially shut down the Senate long enough for the House to get their voting done then there was nothing that the Senate could do with what they got from the House. It is an outrage to democracy but we are certainly not alone in that. People here are outraged about it but still, they will return again and again because the rest of the people pay no attention and Sam is such a good old farm boy doncha know.
We are going down hard and there is no opposition really. A few moderate republicans who fight it but they are being besieged with Koch monied opposition and swift boating kinds of tactics. Many of the Democrats are full in anti woman mode and co-sponsoring anti LGBT legislation. It is almost impossible to find a real Democrat to run here.
As much as I love my state I hate living here right now. Hate it.
