Clinton singles out gay rights as a central pillar of her 2016 presidential campaign

WASHINGTON Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday delivered the strongest statement of support for gay rights in the 2016 presidential race when she promised that ending discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgender people would be a central pillar of her administration.
"I see the injustices and the dangers that you and your families still face," she told hundreds of gay activists at the annual meeting of the Human Rights Campaign. "I'm running for president to stand up for the fundamental rights of LGBT Americans."
She added: "That's a promise from one HRC to another."
.........................
As activists chanted her name, she promised to work to pass legislation that would end discrimination, lower costs for HIV treatment and stop funding child welfare agencies that discriminate against gay parents.
Clinton has placed equal rights at the forefront of her campaign, in part a reflection of the growing political and financial strength of the gay community in Democratic politics.

(18,998 posts)So no, they don't mind at all.
We all know gay people don't care about economic issues as long as they can get married...they are fine with student debt and low paying jobs as long as they have that.
You would think people would see Sanders is for that too...and has not needed to evolve, plus is for economic equality...something that will help all of us.

(9,688 posts)I can't follow the mental gymnastics that must go along with supporting Hillary Clinton.
I'll print out her short speech in the second clip. This is a the strongest statement of what Hillary Clinton considers to be eternal God given principle, echoed universally through the entire history of the human race. This is her credo, affirmed when she was 57 years old - so after an already long life.
"I believe
that marriage is
not just a bond but a sacred bond between a man and a woman.
I have had occasion in my life to defend marriage.
To stand up for marriage.
To believe in the hard work and challenge of marriage.
I take umbrage at anyone who might suggest that those of us who worry about amending the constitution are less committed to the sanctity of marriage or to the fundamental bedrock principle that it exists between a man and a woman going back into the mists of history as one of the foundational institutions of history and humanity and civilization and that its primary principal role during those millennia has been the raising and socializing of children into the society into which they are to become adults."
We're now supposed to believe that, at the age of 66 (2013) she "changed her mind" and "evolved" and is now a leader of the LGBT rights/justice movement. This person who has worked for the big banks, investment capital, war and war profiteers, all her life, and who considers it an ad hominem attack on her when that history is mentioned.

(4,185 posts)I heard you say something strikingly similar to us at an LGBT banquet in New York 15 years ago. You were running for Senator of New York and wanted our vote. And yes, we voted for you.
Then you told us you didn't believe marriage was for us, but you wanted to be our "partner"
-- your word.
Turned out your central pillar then was the invasion of Iraq. It was your legacy, the hallmark of your years as senator. So what kind of idiot do you take me to be, lady, hearing the same shit again from you about wonderful you are for LGBT people?

From one HRC to another
Hello, Human Rights Campaign! Its great to be back with the HRC. Theres no one Id rather share my initials with than you.
Its been quite a year, hasnt it?
It felt like all of America was out dancing in the streets this June. And thats because of you. Because of Jim Obergefell, Edie Windsor, and all the families who took their fight all the way to the Supreme Court. It was because of leaders like Chad, JoDee Winterhof, who is here, and Joe Solmonese, who is here, and Mike Berman, who is my longtime friend and who has been a champion, all the members of the HRC boards and committees, and everyone who marched, sang, wrote briefs, sacrifice, everything you did to make marriage equality the law of the land.
Now there is a map on the wall of my campaign headquarters in Brooklyn, in a place of honor, right when you walk in. Its called States Where Marriage Equality Is Law. And its just a plain old map of the United States. But because now every single American no matter where you live is free to marry whoever you love, the map is colored everywhere. And that is the way it should be. That is real progress, my friends. And the people here today deserve a lot of the credit for making it happen.
Now, youve helped make other progress as well including President Obamas executive order barring companies that do business with the federal government from discriminating against LGBT Americans. And I appreciated your support, when as Chad said, I took steps to ban discrimination at the State Department, including by extending equal benefits to the partners of diplomats.
Im really here to say thank you for your hard work and your courage. And for insisting that whats right is right. Youve helped change a lot of minds, including mine. And I am personally very grateful for that.........

(3,256 posts)In my opinion the being unable or unwilling to change the economic trajectory the Democratic Party has substituted social issues for any kind of coherent economic policy. Why I applaud her shift, what is the right to get married worth if your living in a cardboard box? I don't think this will change any primary votes, but could play well in the general.

(751 posts)More than politicians blatantly pandering. Worse she is not really pandering to the voting public, but trying to get the financial backing of the LGBT donor class similar to Obama in '12.
Obama came through for the LGBT community. Hillary wants this community to forget 25 years record in favor of her platitudes.

(57,349 posts)Of course, Clinton has since evolved on LGBT rights, as many have. That's wonderful. But the problem is, she only came out in support of marriage equality after it was not politically risky to do so. In fact, by 2013 - the year Clinton announced her full support for marriage equality - Democratic support for same-sex marriage was the norm, not the exception.
On such an important moral issue that affects my life and the lives of thousands of other Americans, making decisions in this manner is rather despicable. Additionally, Clinton's habit of doing what polls deem politically popular is the reason why so many voters find her inauthentic. Now, if Clinton were the only option for the Democratic presidential nomination, I would understand why we should support her despite these flaws.
But she isn't the only option.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, the longest-serving Independent in the history of Congress, is also running for the nomination. And unlike Clinton, his record on LGBT rights is historically excellent.
Sanders voted against DOMA, one of the few members of Congress to do so, at a time when such a stance was not politically popular. Four years after DOMA passed, Sanders helped champion Vermont's decision in 2000 to become the first state to legalize same-sex civil unions. This set a national precedent for LGBT equality achieved via legislative means. In 2009, when Vermont became the first state to allow marriage equality through legislative action rather than a court ruling, Sanders expressed his support once again. Truly, Sanders has been a real leader on LGBT rights, even if this leadership isn't recognized in the way that Clinton's current support is.
