Iran's supreme leader bans negotiations with the United States
Source: Reuters
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday banned any further negotiations between Iran and the United States, putting the brakes on moderates hoping to end Iran's isolation after reaching a nuclear deal with world powers in July.
Khamenei, the highest authority in the Islamic Republic, already said last month there would be no more talks with the United States after the nuclear deal, but has not previously declared an outright ban.
His statements directly contradict those of moderate Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who says his government is ready to hold talks with the United States on how to resolve the conflict in Syria, where the two countries back opposing sides.
"Negotiations with the United States open gates to their economic, cultural, political and security influence. Even during the nuclear negotiations they tried to harm our national interests.," Khamenei was quoted as saying on his website.

TEHRAN, Oct. 07 (MNA) Leader of the Revolution has asserted that negotiation with US has no benefit, yet bearing innumerous disadvantages.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution received commanders and staff of IRGC Naval Forces along with their families here in Tehran on Wednesday morning.
Addressing the gathering, Ayatollah Khamenei described the reason behind opposition to any negotiations with the United States; Our opposition to negotiation with US has a reason; the Islamic Republic's talk with US means infiltration. They want to pave the way for imposition. During nuclear talks, they seized any opportunity to infiltrate; thanks to God, Iranian side was vigilant, yet they gained opportunities to act against our national interests.
Negotiation with US is forbidden as it bears innumerous disadvantages and no benefit. It is different from negotiating with a state which has different facilities and motivations, highlighted the Leader and elaborated that the current challenge of the country is because of some inconsiderate or naïve people who do not realize such realities; however, they are few and a minority in front of huge number of Revolutionary, insightful and aware people in country. But they are active, they write, speak, repeat and are supported by enemies.

Just months after the historic nuclear deal reached between Iran and the United States, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced a ban on any further negotiations between the two countries.
Khamenei's ruling conflicts with that of the Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, who last month expressed openness to discussions with the US on the war in Syria.
The ruler made the announcement Wednesday in a meeting with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy, according to his website. He warned those gathered that "The enemies are trying to change (our) officials' calculations and influence the thoughts of people, particularly youths, and everyone should be vigilant and conscious (to prevent this)."
