Argentina: fugitive ex-spy traveled to US
Argentina has claimed that a former Argentine spy chief flew to the US a month after a federal prosecutor was found executed. Buenos Aires suspects the US is providing refuge to the fugitive ex-spymaster.
Date 07.10.2015
Argentina's Ministry of Security said on Tuesday that a suspect in the murder of federal prosecutor Alberto Nisman traveled to the US a month after the incident. Antonio Stiuso, who served as head of operations for Argentina's disbanded Intelligence Secretariat, flew to Miami from Porto Alegre, Brazil on February 19.
The ministry added that Interpol provided the information after a "blue notice" was filed regarding Stiuso's whereabouts.
Argentina suspects the US is providing refuge for the fugitive after several inquiries on Stiuso's location submitted to Washington were left unanswered.
The former spy chief is suspected of involvement in the murder of federal prosecutor Alberto Nisman, who was found dead in January with a bullet to the head.

A fugitive former spy chief accused by the Argentine government of involvement in the murky death of a federal prosecutor in January flew from Brazil to the United States a month later, Argentinas security ministry said on Tuesday.
The ministry said Interpol in Brazil provided the information on Antonio Stiuso, one-time operations chief of the now disbanded Intelligence Secretariat, after a blue notice seeking details on Stiusos location was issued last month.
Argentina suspects Stiuso is seeking refuge in the United States and has criticized Washington for failing to answer repeated enquiries about the spy masters whereabouts.
A similar report is required from Interpol in Washington, the Security Ministry said in a statement.
Stiuso flew from Porto Alegre to Miami on Feb. 19 using an Italian passport, Argentina said, citing the report. Interpol declined to comment. Relations between Argentina have the United States have soured under President Cristina Fernandez, who frequently rails against imperialist powers and gluttonous financial markets in the West.

Argentine Jewish community asks Washington to reveal whereabouts of former spymaster
The Argentine Jewish community has requested that the United States reveal the whereabouts of their countrys former spymaster who reportedly fled to Miami in February following the shooting death of a prosecutor investigating the 1994 car bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and injured hundreds.
According to a report by Telam, the government's official news agency, representatives of the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina, AMIA, hand-delivered a letter to US Ambassador Noah Mamet, asking that Washington turn over information relating to Antonio Jaime Stiuso, who is wanted for questioning by Argentina's government. Such a request is consistent with our ongoing concern in the search for memory, truth and justice for the terrorist attack against AMIA, the letter declared.
Stiuso is believed to have worked closely with prosecutor Alberto Nisman, the government prosecutor who had been tasked with looking into the July 1994 bombing. Nisman was found dead in his apartment earlier this year, only hours before he was due to testify to Congress regarding allegations that President Cristina Fernández had attempted to interfere with his investigation.
Last year an Argentine court struck down as unconstitutional an agreement with Iran for the formation of a joint Truth Commission to investigate the bombing. Many believe that the Iranians played a role in the planning of the bombing, and Argentine courts have previously called for the extradition of several Iranians suspected of involvement in the attack.
Interpol in Brazil confirmed Stiuso took a flight from that country to the United State on February 19, only a few hours after it had been confirmed that he had testified before Viviana Fein, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation into the mysterious death of Nisman.
