FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) An overnight confrontation between two groups of students escalated into gunfire Friday when a freshman at Northern Arizona University killed one person and wounded three others, authorities said Friday.
University police chief Gregory T. Fowler identified the shooter as 18-year-old Steven Jones and said he used a handgun in the shootings at about 1:20 a.m. Friday.
"This is not going to be a normal day at NAU," said school President Rita Cheng. "Our hearts are heavy."
She called it an "isolated and unprecedented incident" and said classes would go on as scheduled Friday.

3. I just spoke with a sleepy BabyGirl 1SBM ...
she is safe and sound in her bed ... and annoyed that her Dad would call her about something that happened on campus (she stays in an apartment off campus) after midnight ... "Daddddd, what would I be doing on campus at 1:00 in the morning ... I have an 8:00 a.m. lab!"
Glad she is safe!

(70,501 posts)A deadly shooting occurred on Northern Arizona Universitys Flagstaff campus early this morning, and the suspected shooter is in custody, according to a university spokesperson.
One person died and three others were wounded in the shooting, the spokesperson said.
It's unclear what sparked the shooting, which took place near Mountain View Hall, a dormitory which houses most of the campus' students involved in Greek organizations.
According to an emergency alert sent by the university, residents in Mountain View Hall were asked to stay indoors.

(31,384 posts)I have a friend whose daughter was a freshman at Virginia Tech when that horror went down.
My youngest son went up to Franklin Street (across the street from campus of UNC-Chapel Hill) one Sunday afternoon with a friend when he was a senior (2007) in high school. Got a call from him a little later: a guy with a sawed off shotgun walked up to both
of them in an alley--at 3 PM on a Sunday afternoon--and demanded all their money. Two high school kids!
Fortunately, they didn't give the guy any lip and handed over the contents of their wallets. Police caught
the guy a day later when he was trying to rob a woman at an ATM about a mile away.
It's some scary $hit out there.

(21,646 posts)In 2011, the Delta Chi house in Flagstaff came under gunfire in a drive-by shooting. Police say the frat house was pockmarked with bullet holes but there were no injuries, the Arizona Daily Star reported at the time. The newspaper added that two other recent firearm-related assaults at the fraternity are also believed connected to drug sales there.
The Arizona Republic reported in 2011 that:
Police have concluded that recent activities occurring at the Delta Chi house at 318 S. Humphreys St., which include aggravated assault and threats with weapons, stemmed from members of the residence selling illegal drugs, Sgt. James Jackson said.
Unfortunately, that would make this quite "normal course" news right?
I think if there had been more national concern regarding gun violence for areas when gang and drug shooting escalated years ago we would not have evolved to so many mass shootings now on top of street drug violence.
As a nation, being ho hum and the ' it can't happen here ' attitude, let gun violence become a common place occurrence everywhere now.

(6,578 posts)A few comments on this, coming from a guy that argues for more gun control.
1) I wouldn't call this a school shooting. It was a shooting that happened at a school.
2) It wasn't random - two groups got into a fight. One of them had a gun. This happens dozens of times a day across the country. It is only news because it happened on school grounds.
3) At least some of the people shot were members of Delta Chi - Delta Chi has been the scene of several shootings in the past. The Delta Chi house (they are the only fraternity currently with an off-campus house) was the scene of a drive-by shooting a couple years ago. Grapevine also says that it is the place to buy drugs on campus.
4) My hunch is a drug deal gone bad, or a fight over a blond sorority chick. But time will tell
5) The Phoenix media is acting like it's Christmas, and they just got the greatest gift of all time - THEIR OWN School shooting!!!
