Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders dies

Flip Saunders, the Timberwolves president of basketball operations who has been sidelined for the coming season as head coach because of cancer, has died, the Timberwolves said Sunday. He was 60.
Saunders is the teams all-time winningest coach, ending with a record of 427 wins and 392 losses. Including his coaching stints at Detroit and Washington, which came between his two Minnesota coaching terms totaling 11 seasons, Saunders NBA record is 654-592.
While the Timberwolves have had not even a sniff of playoff fever since he recently rejoined the team in the front office and last season on the bench, Saunders leaves for interim head coach Sam Mitchell a roster packed with youthful potential thanks to a succession of lofty draft positions.
This was Saunders second go-around with the Timberwolves. The first began in 1995 and included a trip to the Western Conference finals in 2003-04, but he was fired in 2005 as the team found itself out of the playoffs.
